Aikido Post o' Doom

Last night as we were sweeping the dojo, David (in full-on Doctor Mode) gave me a stern talking-to about my dependency on Mountain Dew. He extolled the virtues of coffee, which apparently include reduced risk of diabetes and liver cancer. (The part about liver failure wasn't so much directed at me as it was at Shaun and coupled with "brought on by excessive use of alcohol." XD) I told him that coffee was gross. He told me to learn to love it.

David and Shaun are special. Back in June (I think) I had this conversation with David after class.

Me: What's Shaun?
David: A stubborn, hard-headed Irish Catholic --
Me: ::stern look::
David: Oh, you mean rank. He's Sankyu.

Talking of Shaun, he and I quickly went through the techniques I have to do for my Fifth Kyu test next Monday. And OMG, I did not fuck up either of the kotegaeshi techniques! I've always had trouble throwing Shaun in particular with kotegaeshi. But . . . I did them right. :D

There are some things I still have to remember though. (BUT BEFORE WE GET ANY FARTHER, please see this for clarification.)

Shomenuchi Ikkyo (omote & ura): Come in early. Arms straight, with distance just before the pin. For ura, knee comes down as I pivot and not after.

Shomenuchi Iriminage (ura): Mustn't hook my wrist around uke's before or during the enten. Arm straight, hand on the back of uke's neck and lead him up shoulder-to-shoulder with my forearm straight down his spine as I let him up. Then tenkan and step in through his center of balance.

Katatedori Shihonage (omote & ura): Don't stand up going under/around uke! Pull out instead. Make sure uke's hand connects with his shoulder before the throw.

Ryotedori Tenchinage (omote & ura): Stay low, below uke's center of balance. Face the same direction as uke while positioning hands for the throw, don't let "heaven" hand come too far up before the pivot. Make sure "earth" hand is taking balance as well. Step through uke, not to the side.

Tsuki Kotegaeshi (omote & ura): Irimi only for the omote entry, no tenkan. Keep distance from uke, hands low for the throw. Move with hips, around center -- NOT around hands. For ura, bring uke's hand way low while stepping back.

Ushiro Tekubidori Kotegaeshi (omote & ura): Bend knees to get under uke & release from hold. Same thing about the throw as before. For kotegaeshi pin, watch uke's other hand (don't stare off into space or watch Sensei). For nikkyo pin (but without nikkyo), bring knee that's closest to uke's head down as uke's shoulder hits the mat. For ura, stay close to uke while coming around to get the kotegaeshi grip.

Morotedori Kokyuho (omote & ura): For omote, get elbow way out. Make the throw big. For ura, make uke lean over in front of my center, not his. Also big.

:D
