A Trip to the Pics

I went to see Australia with my Mum and brother last night. Both the story and the acting have some strengths and weaknesses, but overall I really enjoyed the film. It isn't going to win any awards, but it was thoroughly entertaining.  At various times I was on the edge of my seat or almost in tears, which is usually a sign of a half decent story and filming.

I hadn't realised that the film was by the same director as Moulin Rouge, which is probably a good thing because I may have gone in with higher expectations if I had.  Apparently Baz Luhrman also wrote the screenplay? The child who played the mixed-race boy, Nullah, was phenomenal. What a cutie. I enjoyed Nicole Kidman, as usual. I also really enjoyed Hugh Jackman, who for some reason appeared to have his clothes painted on in a few scenes... not that I'm complaining. He was definitely eye candy for me; and oddly even though I've seen other films that he's been in, I hadn't really noticed him before.

Both my Mum and brother had spent a fair amount of time backpacking in Northern Australia (I've only seen the south and west coasts really), and I think the scenery in the film was a bit of a trip down memory lane for them. Every now and then I'd hear Mum exclaim "ooh" and then she'd lean over and tell me that she'd been to whatever piece of scenery was on the screen, and I'd have to shush here before she launched into some story.  Afterwards at dinner they discussed where parts of it had been filmed and the 'crocs' around Darwin. I have to say,  the scenery in the film is specatacular and I wouldn't wonder if northern Aussie gets a tourism boost from the film.
