I could perhaps explain the female tendency to remain in unhealthy relationships in terms of survival. Biologically, men and women are designated by the roles of "hunter" and "care-giver", respectively. Perhaps women see the man's brutality as the ultimate sign of being a "good hunter". This is, of course, silly because the woman doesn't realize SHE is the prey in the situation.
Another simpler explanation could be that they are just blinded by their feelings. "Oh, he's just going through a rough time, he'll be nice again. He doesn't mean to do it, maybe it's my fault." And then the female blames herself instead of the male, because she doesn't WANT to accept the truth.
It should be noted that males are not invulnerable to these weaknesses either. Sometimes, and foolishly so, we believe that accepting some "pain" will be balanced out by the continued existence of the relationship.
Humans are so silly.
