please god, take the pain away ...

Feb 20, 2005 19:34

like a slow rush of blood to the brain,
it rose up from the lower pit of the stomach,
up through the chest.

men and women clutched their bellies,
frightened.

then it ripped through the skin
that wraps the shoulder blades
and escaped into the open air.

it immediately spread out and around
and collected above the peoples’ heads
like grey clouds.

their eyes widened
as they felt it like a ghost,
evacuating their cavity
and evaporating into the
oxygen and carbon dioxide.

the day the pain was lifted,
everything weighed less.

people were decidely lighter.

no one drank.
no one smoked.
painters put down their brushes
and writers put down their pens.

the day the pain was lifted,
everyone left their houses.
smiling, laughing,
and feeling a little less than human.
