What do you hope for?

Her heavy breathes echoed along the alley, each clomp of her heels acting like a beacon. Percy couldn’t help the smirk on his face as he followed silently, his tongue running along his teeth as if he could already taste the sweetness of blood in his mouth. She was dead and didn’t even know it yet, and that was perhaps the sweetest thing of all. The smell of fear on the air with just the tiniest hint of hope. Hope that maybe he’d just…give up.

“Hallo, mousey, mousey…Where are you?” He called out softly, hopping over one puddle and then another as the wind picked up. She stopped up ahead of him, looking back with a stifled scream before turning to run on. “Oh, now, now…Why do you run away mousey?”

She stopped again, this time meeting a fence that cut off all escape from the alley. “Just leave me alone,” she sobbed, a trembling tenor in her voice that matched the weakness of her legs.

“Why would I do that?”

“Please…” Her hand clutched at the fence, as he shoulders sagged in defeat. “Please…my family…”

“Oh, your family? You wish they were here? We could invite them…” He grinned at that, moving as slow as ever as he held out his arms. “I am not unreasonable you know. I would be willing to let them share this experience with you. Oh yes.”

“No! No….Please…”

“You keep saying that, what is it you want.”

“Let me go….I…I won…I won’t tell anyone. No one. I promise.”

“I am sorry…but this I canno’ do.”

“Please!” She screamed at him, her eyes begging with every ounce of hope she had left to muster. “Please! I won’t…I won’t tell!”

“No.”

“Please!”

He laughed, finally come up to her as she fell to the ground, knees scraping along the jagged pavement. Her nails were broken, her hair matted and knotted as she looked up at him with a tear-smeared expression of pleading. “What do you hope for?”

“Let me go…”

“When you die, what is it you hope for?”

“I don’t want to die..”

“But you are, pet. You are…” He smiled softly for a moment, reaching out to brush the hair from her face before he leaned in and whispered softly. “Tell God, for me, tell God…I sent my regards.” She screamed out again, muffled in a sob as his fangs bit into her neck.
