I am currently reading:
Wives and Daughters by Elizabeth Gaskell
American Gods by Neil Gaiman
Here Be Dragons by Sharon Kay Penman
Wives and Daughters has been slow going, and the knowledge that the book was never finished isn't exactly spurring me on. Between this and what a slog I found North and South to be, I've decided that I don't much care for Elizabeth Gaskell. I just don't find her protagonists to be all that relatable, or even likeable.
American Gods has been slow going as well, although for different reasons. I think this may be one of the only books I've ever read that was written from a truly, thoroughly MALE viewpoint, and it's jarring. Maybe even a little out of my comfort zone. I've read books by male authors before of course, but they've usually been books with female protagonists, or at least female supporting characters - someone I could use as an "in" into the world of the book. With American Gods, I've found that I don't really have an "in," and that leaves me a little off-balance.
I love Here Be Dragons. I've never known or read much about medieval Wales before, which is a shame, because I have pretty recent Welsh ancestry through my grandmother. But this book is spurring me on to learn more. Plus, it's just really well-written and immersive. Two thumbs up.
