September 2013: A literary interlude.

I haven't discussed my current reading list lately, so I'm going to do that now.

I've spent the summer slogging through North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell.  I'm about 3/4 of the way through it, and I'm hoping to finish it by the end of this month.  It's been a slow read, and I think it's because I find the heroine, Margaret Hale, hard to take seriously.  She's a little too perfect.  She leaves her sheltered life in Hampshire, arrives in Manchester, realizes "social injustice exists omg!" and immediately becomes a goddess figure to everyone around her.  I don't really see what Thornton sees in her.

Two nights ago I started reading The Blade Itself, the first book in Joe Abercrombie's The First Law series.  It was recommended to me as Game of Thrones replacement therapy, and three chapters in, it seems promising.  I'm also going to be starting the Malazan Book of the Fallen series as soon as I'm done with North and South.

School is going well.  Work is still terrifying, but I haven't majorly screwed up yet.  My grandmother, uncle, uncle's new wife, and cousin all visited this month, which was great.  I only wish they could have stayed longer/I could have hung out with them more.
