Hipster Tourism: The Childhood Home of Michael Jackson

May 05, 2011 15:38

Although I haven't posted much the past few months, I think of my LJ friends even while I'm away. Odd case in point: Last weekend I found myself in Gary, Indiana, a city famous for (among other things) being the birthplace of Michael Jackson. It occurred to me that ohbilliejean might find MJ's childhood home interesting so, much to my husband's nervousness and chagrin, I dropped by the old impoverished homestead and snapped some pics...

A fortuitous burst of sunshine backlights a street sign.

The Jackson Family home is not open to the public, but Wikipedia says it has three rooms inside... three rooms, not bedrooms. Judging solely from the exterior, that's not a typo. The house is very well-kept but tiny. Considering the fact that nine children and two adults lived crammed together there once, rumors of dysfunction probably shouldn't come as a big surprise.

Although Michael came from modest beginnings, later in life his style tended to be a bit more ostentatious. This memorial greeting visitors from the postage stamp-sized front yard serves as an ironic reminder.

Posthumous tributes and gifts surround the property. Of the memorials with photos, most show Michael in less complicated days, as if that's how fans prefer to remember him.

photography, oh the places i'll go!, with a little help from my friends
