Robert Downey Jr. is Kinda Hot, You Know?

For years, my close friend, favorite sister and co-conspirator Holly had a crush on Robert Downey Jr. and I just didn't see it. Though I'd enjoyed his work in films like Less Than Zero, Chaplin and Soapbox, he'd always seemed like the smarmy little brother-type to me. Well, with Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr. shows he's grown into the smarmy leading man-type... or, as someone else put it "the sarcastic-leaning-toward-psychotic guy." AKA just my type. (Please see fictional character "Gregory House" for further details.) But back to Iron Man...

First, the cast: not only does it star the suddenly-sexy RDJ as millionaire-with-a-conscience Tony Stark, it also includes suddenly-bald Jeff "The Dude" Bridges, Terrence Howard, and Gwyneth "My-Head's-What's-in-the-Box" Paltrow. Director Jon Favreau gets in on the franchise by playing Stark's chauffeur, Hogan, and none other than Stan Lee does an Alfred Hitchcock-esque cameo. Not bad for what many consider a second-rate superhero in the Marvel Universe, right? Plus, as an added bonus for the comic geeks among us (me! me!) the Iron Man creation myth is nicely updated for a modern audience while still remaining surprisingly faithful to the original creation myth. The action scenes are well done, the dialogue is crisp... all in all, I'd have to say Iron Man is THE action flick of the summer--even better than The Dark Knight, imo. (And I'm aware that I'm in the minority on that one, but there you have it.)

Final Grade: A

PS You didn't think I was going to close this entry w/out including a random House-related fun fact, did you...? Think again, 'cuz the aforementioned RDJ once appeared on Ally McBeal w/ House's very own Lisa "Just-dropped-in-to-see-what-condition-her-gender-transition-is-in" Edelstein... once again proving my hypothesis that everything in the entertainment industry can be related back to House, given enough thought and misspent time. ;)
And welcome
