bucket_shot's err, I have no idea. And yet I got stuck with writing this. 8D;;;
It seemed like a dream, something he thought it would never come to pass. No longer would there be battles to fought, blood to be shed, lives lost and homes destroyed. There was only peace, a peace which only came at the cost of lives, blood and sweat.
However, despite the peace he was restless. He stared at his wine cup, wondering what should he do. He could ask for some land from his lord, and spent the rest of his days as a farmer, growing crops. It was too late to get a wife, too late to have children.
His hands, despite being weathered with age were firm and strong, palms callused with years of wielding iron rods. His hair was white, no longer the jet black of his youth.
Huang Gai downed the cup and poured himself another. Normally, the other young generals would join him, but with the land at peace, they were no longer at Wu. They had gone off, in search of other adventures. Or so he heard of Lord Sun Ce, much to his younger brother's horror. He had downed another cup when he heard footsteps behind him.
"May I join you?"
He looked up to see Sun Jian and quickly stood up. "O-Of course, My Lord. Sit down. Sit down." He gestured to the empty seats as he pulled a seat out.
Sun Jian took the offered seat and sat down.
"It's good to enjoy wine, when the peach blossoms are in bloom," He said pleasantly, as Huang Gai poured some wine in another cup.
"Yes, it is." Huang Gai replied, passing him the cup and turned his attention to the open window.
"I received news from Shang Xiang," Sun Jian said, taking a sip. "She seems very happy."
Huang Gai nodded, his attention still on the fluttering peach blossoms. "It is good to hear she will be in safe hands. They will have a great country, almost as great as Wu my Lord."
"True," Sun Jian sounded thoughtful. "It is time for the young to shape the future. We old soldiers merely planted the seeds, it is up to them to reap the crops and plan for future harvests."
"If the young must move forward, what should we old soldiers do?"
Sun Jian paused, the cup raised to his lips. "We should remain and make sure the young don't falter. After all, they are still young and full of promise." He sipped. "Quan would be a good ruler, but he is not without his weaknesses and naivety."
Huang Gai nodded, pouring himself another cup and refilled his lord's cup when he placed it back on the table.
Perhaps for you, My Lord. What of us? The old? The faithful who have wished for this day? No longer are there battles to be fought, what reason would be for us to remain? Nothing.
Perhaps, it is best to leave.
"My Lord Sun," Huang Gai cleared his throat.
"What is it, Huang Gai?" Sun Jian seemed distracted, his gaze on the blossoms, watching them flutter in the breeze. In the distance, he heard Quan laughing with someone.
"I would like to return to my hometown, or maybe you would be kind enough to give me some land...my Lord,"
"No need to be formal, Huang Gai. We have been friends for many years." Sun Jian turned to him, a sad expression on his face.
"I am sorry My Lord," Huang Gai quickly apologised and saw Sun Jian's raised eyebrow. "I'm sorry."
"That's better," Sun Jian smiled, before his expression turned thoughtful. "Some land...? Surely you don't plan to live out the rest of your days as a farmer?"
"Wu is a prosperous country, her people are well fed. A life as a farmer would not be so bad," Huang Gai replied. "Considering, I am old. I would be content living the last of my years...I would like sow some crops."
To die on the battlefield, would be a honour. Instead to live in days of peace and question wherever it would be better to die? When one's purpose in life is gone? Too long the fight, one forgets the time of peace.
"I too am old, nonetheless I don't mind it." Sun Jian said, despite his cheery tone, Huang Gai could see the regret in his eyes. "Even if the wars end, it does not mean soldiers are no longer needed, after all what were we fighting for again?" He gestured to the tree and the wine. "So we can drink in peace, knowing the people are free and happy."
"You have a place here, My Lord," Huang Gai replied. "Lord Quan will be a good heir. We generals have no purpose if there is no war."
Sun Jian poured himself another drink. "Huang Gai, it does not mean Wu no longer needs you. Where would we be, if not for our generals?" He touched him on the shoulder, a warm touch that he felt even through his robes. "Wu still needs you," Sun Jian smiled.
I still need you. Words left unsaid.
"I u-understand, my Lord." Huang Gai said. He looked at his cup.
He felt Sun Jian clap him heartily on the shoulder. "Good then, let's drink some more." He heard Sun Jian turn.
"Ah! Lu Meng! You're here. Come join us." Huang Gai turned to see the strategist standing in the doorway. "We have much wine to drink and blossoms to admire."
"Ah," Lu Meng eyed the various bottles of wine, as he walked closer. "I was looking for you, my Lord." He took a seat.
"You were? Did something happen?" Sun Jian poured another cup and passed it to him. He picked up his own cup. "Did someone do something again? Like blow up the room again?"
"No, I would hope not," Lu Meng accepted the cup. "It's different matters."
Huang Gai watched them drink with fondness. He didn't know how he would cope without them, these were men he had fought with and loved like brothers. They had gone through many battles together and overcome them all. All for the name of Wu. Even if he decided to leave and spend the rest of his live as a farmer, he doubted he would find such friends.
"Who wants another refill?" He lifted the wine jug.
"Hmmm, I think it's finished..."
I really crapped this up. :/ Hmm, I don't even think "crapped" exists as a word. LOL
