HAPPY CNY AND V/DAY YOU GUYS <3

Some things were more appealing when you’re younger. He thought glumly. Or maybe he was naïve, as he didn’t question to why every year they had to go to the temple. Every year. To pray for luck, prosperity and be clothed in all red and if one was lucky, getting the chance to get deaf by firecrackers. Although he had to admit, he had loved the lion dancing when he was younger, perched on his father’s shoulders, laughing and clapping.

“Rui, aren’t you coming?” His mother called.

He looked up, to see the rest of his family standing at the top of the stairs waiting for him. Rainee clung to their father’s arm, excitement on her face as she looked around her. People were walking past, people were walking up and down the stairs to the temple.

“I-I’m coming,” He bit back a sigh and started to walk up the stairs.

When he was at the top, he followed his parents to the temple entrance, removing his shoes at the doors and stepping inside with socked feet. Statues of Buddah, Kuan Yin and Kuan Yu sat inside, small pots of lit incense sat in front of them along with many plates of oranges, mangoes and watermelon. His father disappeared for awhile and reappeared with sticks of incense, handing one to each member.

“What are you going to wish for this year, Rui?” Rainee leaned closer to him.

“Rainee, don’t call your brother by name,” Their mother reminded absently, as her lips moved in silent prayer, the incense held in slim fingers.

A sigh before she spoke again. “What are you going to wish for this year, ge ge?” Rainee repeated, tugging his sleeve.

“Something,” He replied. “What are you wishing for?”

Something, I want…but it’s not possible.

“A new Barbie doll and maybe some more li xi,” Rainee smiled before she turned her attention to the front, closed her eyes and looked so serious, he couldn’t help but laugh.

He turned to the statue of Buddah, fingers clasping the incense tightly.

“Please look after my family and friends this year. And please if possible, give me the courage to confess.” He prayed, let out the breath he didn’t realise he was holding and walked to the pot of incense, where others before had him had placed their incense. He placed the stick in and walked back to where his parents were waiting. Well, his mother and sister anyways. His father had moved to praying in front of the Kuan Yu.

“Mumm, who’s that?” Rainee pointed to the statute of Kuan Yin. “Is she a lady?”

“It’s rude to point honey,”

After his father was done, they retrieved their shoes and went down the stairs to mingle amongst the various stalls. Rui walked around, taking in all the sights and wondering wherever he should get a fortune. Even if he couldn’t understand it, considering the horoscopes were all in Chinese.

As they were walking to the car, he felt his mobile vibrate signifying a message. Odd, it was rare of him to get messages this late, unless it were his insane cousins texting everyone, wishing Happy New Year. Curious, he fished out of his pocket and checked his inbox.

Hey Rui, sorry to sound so sappy.
But Happy Valentines Day.

He smiled. He wasn't expecting the message to come from Khristos of all people, but it was cute nonetheless.

“Ge ge! You’re slow! Hurry up!” He heard Rainee call.

“Coming!”

He didn’t want to admit it, but he suddenly felt lighter. The New Year suddenly looked promising.

Notes: Not sure,if Chinese temples are similar. Where you have to remove your shoes before entering and all.
哥哥 Chinese word for brother. Tell me why, I made Rui to be half Chinese, when my Chinese is non existent?
Ending is quite lame.
