Never Forget The Ones Who Look Up To You The Most

In a text message to my Son in Dallas who lives with I will use the term lightly, Mother, a woman who ever since his birth has been everything to me. For many years she has kept him as a “latch key” kid and more so after our divorce. Phone calls were difficult and, well for instance it has been since October of this year since I have seen him because they always seem to have “Something” going on.

MY MESSAGE WAS:

“You know? The entire time that I was raising you, I loved being your best friend when you were not allowed to go out to play with anyone because of the fact that your mother was always worried about you for one reason or another. I hate being away from you so much.”

I always resented her for that. From the time I watched him born, the bond that I shared with him was so strong. I never left his side. Ever if I could help it. Even if he would get in trouble at school I would be there in a moment’s notice to make sure that the punishment that he faced was fare.

I know that his teachers resented that but you know. I would not have it any other way. Moreover, although his mother was a PITA he still needed to be with kids his own age. Al though I had my career, I still came home and took care of him,

Our days were filled with me getting off work and going out to Toy’s R Us and either window shopping or maybe possibly getting something to play with. I always made sure that he had every toy that I had growing up and then some that they of course had then.

One time he wanted to go camping so I took off work early, went out and bought a tent, camping mattress and all the gear for us to set up in the back yard and stayed out there the entire night. We always had that stipulation to adhere to. Last year, I was told by his mother that I could not’ see him for Christmas Eve or Christmas Day.

I was on my last leg so to speak and with all the other things that were happening in my life, I decided that I had enough. I was just a worthless mess or so I thought. I did the unthinkable. UI have talked about it so much that I will not bring it up again.

Just on a whim later, about April I believe, I asked him what he did for Christmas Eve and Christmas last year “ Did you go to your Grandparents or something?” and he told me that they stayed at home and did nothing. I was soooooooo Pissed. I did the most unthinkable thing I ever could because I believed the rhetoric.

In a way his mother won momentarily, but in the end, now that he is getting bigger and more responsible, I know in her incredibly cold heart that she had lost him long before we even finished with the divorce. When she took his best friend, she sealed her own fate.

IN THE END THOUGH, HE REPLIED:

“I know how you feel Dad but I just wanted to say that I love you too.”

At that point in time, I knew that my heart was completely crushed, but if it makes any sense at all, I was overjoyed. My Son knew and knows that I have never forgotten anything about him. The only thing that I could think of at the time was a Jimi Hendrix Song that was written back in 1971. Hmm I guess in a way I am showing my age but at this point, it does not matter to me. I felt that the lyrics fit the feeling that I had at the time of writing this.

To my Friends and My Colleagues If can relate to this and if you have children or if you do not yet, never ever allow anyone come between you or your children.

Angel came down from heaven yesterday. She stayed with me just long enough to rescue me. She told me a story yesterday, about the sweet love between the moon and the deep blue sea. Then she spread her wings high over me; she said she is going to come back tomorrow. And I said, Fly on my sweet angel. Fly on through the sky, Fly on my sweet angel, Tomorrow I'm gonna be by your side".

Sure enough, this morning came unto me, silver wings silhouetted against the child's sunrise. And my angel she said unto me. "Today is the day for you to rise take my hand, you are going to be my man, you are going to rise". Then she took high over yonder and I said, "Fly on my sweet angel, Fly on through the sky, fly on my sweet angel, forever I will be by your side"
