I pretty much failed at fandom this past year. Part of the problem was the chaotic living situations I found myself in but the other part was just pure laziness/indecisiveness on my part. (Media buffets are awesome in theory but I get overwhelmed easily. :P)
The year started off well though and I had periods of fannish competency every once in a while so 2009 wasn't quite a complete loss.
In no particular order, things I loved this year:
嵐 (Arashi);
2009 was the year that I really paid attention to their music, realised that the others were just as awesome as MatsuJun, started watching Arashi no Shukudai-kun, & really just fell in love with these 5 adorable idiots. ♥
Final Fantasy;
I picked an Aurikku image to represent my love for the franchise because, well, DUH. :D I reached a tipping point a few months back where my love for FFX became an obsession with pretty much everything FF-related. I haven't been this fannish about anything for a long time. I'm reading and writing fic, checking YouTube every day for new vids, & generally just thinking about video games all the time.
Sailor Moon;
I watched the entire series this summer, from the first episode through Sailor Stars. It was an effort ten years in the making, as I started watching the anime back in 1999 (when it was being dubbed on Cartoon Network). I adore Usagi as much now as I did back then.
NCIS;
With the exception of the current season, I think I have now seen every episode of this series at least once (thanks to USA & its love for marathons). Abby! Gibbs! McGee! Ducky! ♥ It's a bit weird how into the show I am, given my dislike for the American military. (... for personal, not political, reasons, I should add.)
Nodame Cantabile;
I like to holler 'Chiaki-senpai' whenever Tamaki Hiroshi pops up in something else, I have watched some awesome yet incredibly strange movies just because Ueno Juri or Eita happen to be in them, and I actually know a little bit about classical music now. I can't wait until later in 2010 when the movies are available and subbed. *flails*
I didn't consume quite enough media to make other top 5 lists worth doing so, instead, here's a (hopefully thorough) list of things I enjoyed over the last 12 months.
Movies
Arch Angels;
... this is one of the 'awesome yet incredibly strange movies' I was talking about. Ueno Juri kicks ass in this. :D
My review;
*cough*.
Boku wa Imōto ni Koi o Suru;
Incest has never looked quite so pretty.
My review;
*cough*.
Summer Time Machine Blues;
This has both Ueno Juri & Eita in it and it's a great time-travelling comedy. I keep meaning to rewatch it actually...
My review;
*cough*.
Twilight;
I was incredibly late to the party on this one, which I guess makes up for reading the book ages before it became the next big thing. Anyways, I liked it?
My review.
The Ramen Girl;
... this was the last thing I watched Brittany Murphy in. It's such a great movie, I really wish it had been better publicised.
My review.
Death Note;
I bought the DVD with my birthday money. I loved it &... I probably should have thought about buying the last two movies with my Christmas money. Ooops. Heh, anyways--
my review.
2012;
I'm so glad I got to see this in the theatre & it did not disappoint me. :D
My review.
Watchmen;
Another movie I watched long after everyone else did. I went into it with a JDM bias but I really loved it on the whole. Patrick Wilson is definitely on my radar now.
TV
Nodame Cantabile;
See above, re: my love for this. :D :D :D
My review;
*cough*.
Hana Yori Dango;
The cast! The story! This series was difficult to watch at times (oh hai, embarrassment squick) but I thoroughly enjoyed it.
My review of s1,
s2,
the movie;
*cough*.
Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon;
I started watching this & then abandoned it to finish the anime instead. I haven't gotten back to it yet, which is disappointing because I was almost at the end. I liked it, even if it was drastically different from the Sailor Moon I had known and loved.
My review of Acts 00-11,
12-28.
Sailor Moon;
I will never, ever tire of this story. ♥
My thoughts on s1,
R,
Super,
SuperS through Stars.
Coffee Prince;
I'm glad this was my first Korean drama because it was just amazing. I loved the story, the characters, and I really adore the actors. I've started watching Goong because of YEH, I have Triple to watch thanks to Lee Sun Gyun, & I can't wait to see what Gong Yoo does next. :D
Misc.
Persona 3 FES;
This was the game that brought me out of my gaming slump and I feel bad that I've abandoned it for Final Fantasy for the time being. I hope to return to it soon. It was really interesting to play and I love how unapologetically Japanese it is.
Hell Girl;
I've read the first two volumes and, even though it's different from what I usually read, I quite liked it. The questions on morality it poses are quite thought-provoking. Would you get revenge on someone even at the cost of your soul?
Full Moon o Sagashite;
I'm four volumes in and, while it's typical shoujo fare, I like it. :D The plot 'twist' that is revealed early on actually surprised me, so Arina-sama gets definite props from me on that.
... *facepalm* I really, really hope I can buckle down in 2010 and watch/read more. This list is pretty paltry and pathetic. :|
