Mine is an evil laugh!

Okay. I know I said that instead of doing each episode individually, I'd just do the whole series at once. Well, I have almost three pages of notes just about this episode ... so it's probably better to do it this way. :D Comments are more than welcome (if you feel the need to -- I'm not demanding any or anything), but please don't spoil me for big events. I want there to be some element of surprise as I continue watching.

If you're just joining the program here at this dear ol' journal, my tv reviews aren't actually reviews per se. They're more train-of-thought/play-by-play kind of things. I do try to have coherent thoughts though. *grins*

One of the nicer things about coming into this fandom at this time is that I go into watching it knowing a bunch of things. I know the series is relatively dead (save the movie) so I'm saved the nervous breakdown that would have come with the cancellation (like what happened with, say, Wonderfalls). And because of LJ, I knew the basic elements. I knew the characters all by name & the basic relationships, so I could spend more time concentrating on the story & less time trying to figure out who the hell all these people were. :D

I have to admit. I have a major bias for Alan Tudyk. I absolutely love the guy. So, of course, I <3 Wash. And the scene with the dinosaurs -- so freakin' adorable.

The show is just a few minutes in & it has already proven that Firefly isn't your typical kind of space show. What struck me was that, in terms of comparison with other shows in this type of genre (I'm speaking of things like ST & such), there aren't the strictest rules associated with gender roles. Coming from Joss Whedon, the ultimate 'girl power' kind of guy, it's not surprising -- yet I was still surprised. I was surprised to see a strong & intelligent woman being the 'second-in-command' and still being able to have a healthy emotional & sexual relationship with someone who wasn't the 'leader'. I was surprised to see a funny & caring woman (I have to fight the urge to call her a girl, because she's just so darling) who, besides being the 'baby of the group, runs the ship in terms of making sure Serenity actually works. I know Whedonverse is all about the talk, so has there been meta discussion on this sort of topic before? I would really like to read it if there was.

I was a bit worried when the very twangy music started to play, but then I realised that it was a perfect fit to the series -- and once I got used to it, it was hardly noticeable as something that different.

I'm trying to cut down on my comparisons of Firefly with AtS & BtVS because I now realise that they are completely different things, but Mal's line -- 'Score one for the bad guys.' -- reminded me almost instantly of AtS seasons 4 & 5. I bet the topic is already a dead horse type of thing, but I like how Joss keeps questioning the strict black/white line that exists. He keeps showing that good people can do 'bad things' and still be good people in every sense of the word.

I really hope that this is on the DVD -- if it is, I'll probably be more eager to purchase it. The quality of what I watched, while it was better than nothing, left a bit to be desired. But I ain't complaining too much -- because it's truly better than not watching it at all.

I instantly liked Book. He's just so calm & zen-like.

Simon ... seems a bit odd. (I liked him more as the show went on. On first sight though, he just struck me as very very odd.)

Kaylee is just adorable. 'It's no problem, 'cause it's not.'

'How's business?' 'None of yours.' Oh, I already like Inara. :D

Mal's a bit of an ass. :/ (And I don't mean in the Tightpants sort of way.)

And then there are people like Jayne who make Mal look almost civil. Jayne will get less abrasive as the show progresses ... doesn't he? :X

Like I mentioned before, I really wanted Wash to be my favourite character -- but I'm finding that Book intrigues me a lot more than the other characters do.

'This is not my best day ever.' Love. That. Line.

I had a feeling that the only character I didn't recognise would be the bad guy ... and look, I was right. :P

The camera work on this episode was a bit shoddy at times -- though it could just be the copy I had. If it's not the fault of my end, I can honestly see why this version was passed over.

It's probably proof that I've been in the HP fandom too long, but now I totally get all the stuff about the crazy space incest on Firefly. It doesn't squick me or anything. (Yep, been in HP too long. I've heard there's River/Simon fic. Might have to track some down. Perhaps.)

Zoe is one badass (yet really nice) woman. The scene with Simon where she explained about Serenity was certainly eye-opening.

I'm still not sure if I like Jayne or not, but I was very much amused by 'Pain is scary.' & the way the line was delivered. Very funny. XD 'I was going to get me an ear too.'

Horses. In space. I find something terribly amusing about that. Heh.

'What's wrong, sweetie?'
Kaylee is the kind of girl you just want to hug! *cuddles*

Zoe & Wash! ♥

Yep. Still not liking Jayne, but I do like Mal a lot more in the end than I had throughout the whole episode.

I have to admit that I did get goosebumps with 'Executive Producer -- Joss Whedon' came up. It's probably just weird -- I hadn't actually been expecting to watch another Whedon production. And now he's got me hook, line, & sinker into Firefly.

I think now I'm going to do some reading over at Whoa. Good Myth, a site recced by seanarenay.
