I really like how your idea for the tattoo is both fandom and not. I mean, it's one of the reasons why I settled for my design. Yes, it's a deathly hallows sign and all potterheads recognize, but most muggles don't and it's brilliant. You also have the plus of it being a really good reminder for you! :)
I'm not going to try to talk you into getting a tattoo, if you're not sure, I think it's something you have to be sure about. I mean, I always knew I wanted to get tattoos, but it took me years and years to settle on what I want first. And then change that into a different tattoo and still just sit on the idea for few months (would probably be longer if not for my friend). I've had to be absolute sure this is what I want and that's where I want it. (And yet even driving to get it, I was wondering if I shouldn't switch which hand I want it on XD)
As for the scar, lots of people choose to have tattoos to cover up their scars. I don't think it would be overly melodramatic, though obviously you need to decide that on your own. It'd suck if you started hating it, because you'd think it looks wrong or sends the wrong message.
So, basically I think if you're not sure maybe you should wait? Then again, if you're constantly thinking about it, then maybe you're just anxious, but you should get one. ;D (I'm horrible at giving advice. XD) I know that, when I wanted to make sure if I wanted that design in this place I drew it on my skin and spent a day/few hours with it a few times. It helped actually, because a) I switched from my first idea of getting it on my wrist, b) when the tattoo artist talked to me about where exactly to put the design/how will it look, when I turn my hand, etc - I was all ready, because I already checked. Maybe something like that could help you out? :)
A friend on Dreamwidth suggested waiting for 6 months and seeing if I still want it and I think I'm going to go with that. After all, if I want it them 6 months won't make that much difference. And if it is faddy then I'll have moved on.
Seems like a good idea You have timetable to work with, but also you're able to put it off. The first tattoo I've decided on - and the one I'm still going to do later, because it was too complicated for my first time - I told myself to wait a year before being sure of it. And sure enough, when I was sure ofit after a year, I'm still sure of it and that I'm getting it one day, when I have enough cash to spend. ;)
