Because I only decide to use my omnipotent powers sometimes, I didn't see the world figure skating championships until today when they were actually shown on TV. Plus, you know, when I look up figure skating it always turns into porn, so I was curious if it would hold true on ABC prime time as well.
Why is it called the death spiral? That really says something about the aggressive drives of the people who named all these skating moves...
The costumes. Why? Just why? Particularly the man who was wearing a quarter of a suit jacket. Was he mugged for the clothes off his back on his way to the show? And I have a general observation about the women's costumes. So many of them look really revealing, with low cuts and slits down the middle and the back. But looking closely at those costumes - its all flesh colored material. Keep in mind that everything is over determined, which means there is no one single reason for something occurring. So why have so much of the costumes made of flesh colored material? Sure, you want to look pretty but obviously need the support and the coverage, but there are always multiple reasons for everything. So why not just make a costume that is made entirely out of the colored fabric, that is, why do need to show 'skin?' Because if you wanted to show skin you probably could, costumes could be designed differently. So are skaters having a problem fusing their desires to present themselves as sexual while still wanting to be considered pure (thus with the being completely covered)? Is there a way that the two elements can be fused?
I'm not singling out anyone here, I'm just making an observation about what I saw while watching. If you'd like to chime in with other reasons - go for it. There are undoubtedly many, many reasons for this - some of them practical (like support and coverage) and some of them more rooted in the unconscious (ambivalence about sexuality). And I'm not meaning to imply that people who wear these costumes have "issues" or anything of the sort, and I highly doubt that anyone is taking this ambivalence to a pathological level. I'm really just the messenger. And you know what you shouldn't do the messenger.
Thoughts, thoughts anyone?
