Today's Friday Five is brought to us by eno_on on Livejournal.
1. After your first language, what language would you most like to learn? (Say first language too)
2. Does your country have a second language? What is it?
3. How many languages can you count to 5 in? To 10 in? List them.
4. What is the first overseas country you visited? And from where? (ie/ timbuctoo to mars)
5. What country do you most want to visit? And why?
1. My first language is English. I also speak French, Spanish and Portuguese. I would love to learn either Chinese or Icelandic. I would settle for improving my German significantly (I was never good in it, and even that is really rusty now).
2. Our second official language is French. The NWT had 11 official languages before it was split into NWT and Nunavut (Dene, Inuktitut, Cree, English, French and I'm not sure what else). I'm not sure which territory has which official languages now. Increasingly, there is pressure to have at least some First Nations languages used in Parliament. Then we have all the immigrant languages. Chinese, Hindu, Punjabi, Ukranian, Spanish and Tagalog are among the larger groups. Approximately 200 languages are spoken in the city of Toronto, an incredibly diverse place where about half the population has a mother tongue other than English or French.
3. English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, German.
4. France, from Canada. Technically it wasn't a visit as we moved there when I was two and stayed for five years.
5. I have wanted to visit Iceland since I was a little gir. Back then, I was fascinated by the geography. Now I want to visit all the historical sites and museums, too.
