100 days of flight

Ugh, I've really depressed today and the only thing that's really helping is this story idea that's been running around in my head for a while... except the sucky thing is that I can't focus on my work thanks to it :\

So I'm going to try writing about the idea in my head, and hopefully it's not stupid and I actually get back to working on it instead of letting it sit in my head and just doodling the characters whenever I'm bored.

It's a Pokemon fanfic/fancomic story, derp.

So according to this (and I haven't found the official source yet, but I've been hoping to), by the April after a Pokemon trainer's 10th birthday, trainers usually get their first Pokemon. It's been a really long time since I've watched the first episode of Pokemon and I might have to rewatch it or reread PokeSpe (for the millionth time...) just to find this out, but I was toying around with the idea that usually when most children become trainers, they also get officially registered as trainers. I was toying around with the idea of what happens if you DIDN'T do this when you were 10 like all the other cool kids around the block and were stuck at home instead or something, and the idea of a kid being an "illegal trainer" - not in the "look at me I'm a badass" sort of way, but in the completely accidental sort of way.

Then I had a dream about Amelia.

Amelia is this kid who gets stuck in her home in Fortree City for five years. Not forcibly or anything, but because her birthday is in April (so she'd have to wait until the consecutive April the year after, which is when she'd be 11) and also because her mother promised her that she would take her to Newbark Town to see Professor Birch. Except her mom is kind of a flake for some very important reasons that I'm going to keep secret for now, and her mom ditches her for the next four years thanks to some important business that has to do with her knowledge of Flying type Pokemon, since she's a Flying type trainer. (I like the idea of a mom not being present rather than the dad, which is always the case in Pokemon. Stupid heteronormativity!) Her dad is a carpenter that makes the cool tree houses in Fortree and loves his family very much, but he's entirely against the idea of Amelia going to Newbark town without an escort because it's a pretty long trip. He does his best to be a good dad to Amelia though otherwise and pretty much spoils her.

For the first few years Ami is pretty understanding about the situation and sends her lots of letters, and her mom is still nice enough to send her birthday presents like feather earrings and stuff. But by the fifth year, when Amelia is 16 and nobody her age is really around to hang out with, Ami gets a little cabin fever. She also become a typical teenager and says she hates her mom even though she doesn't mean it, but that's just her being silly and impulsive. Her dad is torn between both of them because on one hand he thinks his wife is being unfair, but on the other hand his wife is doing some pretty important researchy stuff (*coughLEGENDARYBIRDScough*) and is traveling pretty far away (Alto Mare, probably), and his wife is just that sort of adventure-y type who has never liked sticking to one place. He himself has always been too busy and, plus, the only Pokemon he has that's travel worthy is Tropius (He has all grass types. A Grovyle was his starter.) and Tropius isn't really a safe ride since he's not the most graceful flyer.

So on Amelia's 16th birthday, her mom's Pelipper Philippa arrives with Ami's present, but this year Amelia refuses to accept it. Ami throws a temper tantrum about how she wants to get out of her town and start her own journey. She spends the day trying to avoid Philippa, who has orders from Amelia's mom NOT to leave until Ami responds. During the day, she hangs out with Winona a bit to ask her about how to get rid of Philippa, but to no avail. Amelia envies Winona's ability to be independent and do her own thing, and the thought sticks with her.

Later that night, Amelia is watching the Lyrids (yes, I went there) and she meets a Natu who is reading her thoughts. The Natu happens to be a Natu that escaped from the Safari Zone earlier that week. Thanks to a lot of similar feelings of being trapped beyond their own free will and separated from their mothers (All Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald Safari Zone pokemon are imported from Johto, and let's just say this Natu wasn't happy with that), the Natu befriends Amelia. Amelia names her Hailey, after the comet on occasion of the meteor shower. (herp derp)

Following Winona's example, Amelia decides to run off on her own with Hailey. Philippa adamantly forces Amelia to take her mother's birthday present, and incidentally it turns out to be a Pokemon Egg. (Amelia's mother had similar ideas about Amelia starting off on her own. They're both pretty rambunctious, adventurous, and impulsive people.) Amelia sends her mom a thank you letter and lets her know what she plans to do before leaving Fortree behind her.

However... Those who do not obtain their Trainer ID and do not comply with obtaining their first captured Pokemon without the supervision/accepted liability of a responsible adult would be considered to be stealing the Pokemon. In other words, if you caught a Pokemon without having your "license" (your ID) and the Pokemon was not registered under your parents so that they were liable for taking care of you and your Pokemon, you'd be considered a criminal. A trainer has 100 days within the capture of their Pokemon to register it under their Trainer's license, or else it would be considered a theft (not unlike Team Rocket or all the other Teams).

This, on top of the fact that Amelia has a stolen Pokemon from the Safari Zone, as well as a ton of other adventures she gets into, Amelia basically gets in trouble for a dozen and a half crimes. The rest of the story goes into establishing whether or not Amelia is guilty, if she's guilty at all.

And... yep. I hope that when I'm not nearly as busy I can actually work on this a tad, haha .__.;;

pokémon, writing, rambling
