HELLO SAVANNAH!

Jan 04, 2009 17:03

I made it to Savannah in one piece. I bought a new, larger suitcase before I left so I wouldn't have to ship the majority of my stuff. The luggage wasn't a problem until I got to the house. The stairs were just the first thing I underestimated that day; I forgot how steep and narrow they were. They aren't a problem walking normally, but trying to carry up a 70 pound suitcase was not going to happen. Not a problem, since I just unpacked downstairs and made multiple trips.

My room was all made up when I got upstairs too! It was really sweet, since I was expecting it to be completely empty. I rearranged the set up yesterday so there is a bit more space. But there was a dresser! I was so delighted at not having to live out of my suitcase for a while. I still need a desk, a nightstand, and a screen for my window. But here's a shout out to mom who made me pack sheets, and due to her I didn't have to sleep on a bare mattress. Rock on.

Roomie 1 got home and invited me out to dinner with her and her friends in a small celebration of one of them getting some kind of license.
This was the other event I underestimated. Before we left the house we were talking about New Year's Eve and what we both did that night, and she started talking about how she went a little too far that night and wanted to take tonight's dinner easy. We proceeded to dinner at a sushi place where the four of us split three bottles of champagne. It was here that I discovered that the Hostess City has a policy in which you can take your hard drinks with you into town as long as it is in a plastic party cup. Our next stop was Tantra: a bar with live music. It was here that I discovered-- thanks to the observation and the loud proclamation from one of the girls--that black guys like me. Three had asked me to dance. I was also told that I am going to need to learn how to do the bus-stop. Although the same girl showed me a trick that will come in handy: to ask the bartender for a water & cranberry. It looks like a drinky drink, and I won't get crap for just having water. I plan on using this often.

I should have used it at the next place. My first night here and I go bar hopping. More drinks, more live music. Less dancing. The girls wanted to go to one more place, but I had them drop me off since I was exhausted. I think I had been awake for almost 24 hours by that point. They dropped me off at the house at 2am. On the downside I went home drunk, and my head hurt, and everything still smells of cigarettes. More importantly on the plus side, I made friends and met new people.

*addendum to last night as well as some new info*

So, they drop me off at 2am, and continue on to a wine bar. their 3rd/4th? place of the night. I wake up at 4am to the single chord of 'horse with no name' wailed repeatedly on a guitar downstairs. I'm exhausted from waking up at 4am the prior morning to catch the plane to get here in the first place.

I like that I've had a whole time's worth of experience just within the first 24 hours of my landing. Bar hopping, hangover and roommate conflict. All I needed was a crisis and it would have been a full house. I don't know poker terms--let's switch to something I do know...I would have caught all the pokémon.

I haven't met anyone here yet that would have gotten a pokemon reference. I know there have to be some, I'm just not quite sure where to look yet. There is a movie night at a coffee shop called the Sentient Bean--I love the name!--on the 7th, which I should go to. That's where I am now. There isn't any wifi at the house right now, which will need to be remedied since one of my classes this quarter is online. It's the Intro class and of course it is only offered in a real classroom in the fall, and I didn't want to wait until next September to take it. Luckily in the orientation yesterday I met a girl here in Sav who is also in it. She is also in my other two classes, so if we aren't completely tired of each other, I'm hoping I can get her info so we can meet up and discuss the class once a week.

The orientation was helpful in that I at least know where I'm going tomorrow. According to googlemaps, I'll be walking a mile to each of the buildings. And I haven't gotten a bike yet, so my ass will be fantastic if have to walk 2 miles every day.
