The Women's EURO 2013 has started and I'm sure we're all as excited as the Brits were by the end of their "
77" year Wimbledon drought.
Going by last night's results, no one should listen to any predictions of mine. Italy and Finland not only drew but didn't score a single goal. This was apparently about as exciting as it sounds.
Sweden vs Denmark, which I did watch, was a more exciting affair. The high ranking tournament hosts let Denmark score a goal first! And then could only equalise in a pleasingly energetic game.
The real jaw-ache was the two penalties awarded against Denmark. The keeper actually managed to save both. Lotta Schelin and Kosovare Asllani didn't exactly give it their best shots, but the second goal was especially well saved. Stina Petersen just waited patiently, you could see her confidence.
Which was funny, because in an interview immediately after the match, Petersen said she'd asked who would be taking any Swedish penalties and which side they favoured. Apparently, the pain in my jaw was not about to improve post-match because the answer was, "No idea." !!! A clear example of how women command less resources than those presumed to be in possession of a penis. You would never would've heard that from the men's game, they would've analysed the hell out of the opposition's penalties.
Anyway, good start to the tournament and I have Germany vs the Netherlands to look forward to tonight. The Lionesses took part in 2007 for the first time and reached the semis, which was something of a surprise. I don't think they'll surprise against the title-holders tonight but I'm currently at nul points for my match predictions, so....
