Football Card Frenzy

Feb 17, 2010 21:45

Forewarned is forearmed. When I last visited the Netherlands in November, the Albert Heijn supermarket chain had caused a frenzy with their Snow White collectibles. This time, I was warned the instant I'd paid for my shopping, I'd be mugged for my football cards. Apparently, this is an annual thing and a Big Deal. In fact, there are railings the kids have to stand behind while making their petitions to prevent them from roaming the supermarket and ravaging the shoppers.

So, I didn't expect the urgent cries of "Mevrouw, mevrouw!" the very moment my delicate Doc Martens were over the threshold. But I was quickly tagged and released.

Sadly for the collectors, I failed to spend the 10 euro required for a card. But just as well for me because otherwise I would've had to choose which of the four to give it to.
