Computer Nomenclature

I name my computers. I don't care what you think about it. My first computer that I ever named is now being given to another family, he's old. If you don't know why all computers are men you haven't heard the joke, search any webpage and you'll find it. It's to do with French.

Moving on, my first computer's name is Bob. Bob, or Robert was an uppity computer in constant need of repairs and attention, rarely functioning as he should. I was very young when he was first brought home. I believe it was at least 1995, making me only seven years old. I remember I was very excited about the paint program. This was still when very few had computers, so we were privileged.

Bob became a problem and endless upgrades and viruses took its toll on us all. So, we got Phil. Phil is the computer I'm writing on right now, he's well behaved, house trained if you would, he does as he is told. He is efficient and convenient and has yet to cause me real stress. I love Phil.

I'm leaving home this autumn, and for that reason I need a computer all my own. My computer is an HP computer some 12?? series. I don't understand it. All I know is that I've named him Mike, and he's all mine. Mike has only been around a short time but I have high hopes. It's sad to think that most old computers end up in landfills, not always in the area, but in Nigeria where chemicals poison locals. Sad for the computers, and I suppose also the locals. We humanize these machines, fill them with emotions and motives, we give them lives and personalities. That's why I've named them Bob, Phil and Mike.
