[lj] WARNING: Scrapbook being replaced, back up your images if you care

Apr 28, 2012 23:48

Heads up, peeps! Rumor has it that LJ will shortly (how shortly, I don't know) be releasing "Scrapbook II", which will replace the present "Scrapbook" functionality.

See http://lj-pics-beta.livejournal.com/862.html

The claim being passed around was originaly posted by zeitgeistic, but that post is now locked. It reads: Livejournal Scrapbook is going away and will be replaced by the mysterious "Photo Album". Your 10GB of Paid Member space is now 2GB. If you care, there is an explanation in Russian on the Russian news page. There's also a user-submitted translation.

+ You will no longer have access to your Scrapbook once this goes live.
+ Your images will redirect, but the URL will be different.
+ Unable to tell what will happen to any photos you have that put you over the 2GB limit.
+ Back up your Scrapbook just in case.
+ If you want your photos transferred over now instead of waiting, let them know here.
Note I don't know the source for the information that the quota is dropping, and it's not really clear what the changes will mean. Maybe some of my droogs could investigate and let us know?
I find foreboding, "However, images that had any 'friends only' security level of any kind will be migrated as private images. This is due to limitations in the migration capability, due to the wide variety of custom protected settings that could be used previously -- we did not want to risk any situations occurring where a custom security level would accidentally be converted incorrectly and end up at a lesser security level than intended." (Emphasis mine.) That suggests they're reducing permissions granularity on pictures...?

Anyways: change of some sort seems to be coming, so maybe you want to back your stuff up, if you've been relying on Scrapbook.
