[LJ, DW, Admin] Why Now

Dec 27, 2016 23:53

I am hearing credible reports that:

• The LJ servers are now in Russia.

• There has been a massive uptick in migrations from Cyrillic users into Dreamwidth.

I am hearing unverified reports that:

• There is some sort of political purge of accounts happening in the Cyrillic side of LJ.

my assumption has been that since it was bought my privacy here was basically nil to the russian government or to any employee of livejournal... so i'm not feeling especially more worried now that the servers are physically somewhere else. it's a good reminder to back up things to DW though, since i would be sad if it vanished.

Have set up my own fallback arrangements at DW, and will likely set up cross-posting in the next day or three. After that, I'll see what else I can and should do.

Looks like as as part of this move, most of the site is no longer over SSL as well. If you try to specifically load https://livejournal.com, it kicks you back to the plain http.
