Batman Begins Review (minor spoilers)

I saw Batman Begins this afternoon. Let me say, wow. Just. Wow. Unequivocally, I would say that this is by far and away the best comic book adaptation I've ever seen, and yes, that includes Sin City. This is everything that a Batman movie has been missing since... well... ever. And, before I get flamed, I loved Sin City. But I had issues with it, more so than I had with BB. I'll get into it if you want, but this isn't a review of Sin City.

First off, the movie follows Bruce Wayne, as he begins his journey in finding out who he is, and, eventually, his transformation into Batman. Something this movie does, which no other Batman movie does whatsoever, is follow the Dark Knight throughout the entire film. While you have brief glances into the villians, such as Ra's Al Ghul, Carmine Falcone, and Scarecrow, this movie is almost all Batman, all the time. And it's awesome because of it. Batman may be the most complex super hero there is, and Christian Bale plays him wonderfully. You see him come into his own, and almost take on an entirely new persona once he dons the Batsuit. Don't believe me? Check out the scene where he catches Flass by the toe.

Speaking of performances, everyone delivers quality performances. Cillian Murphy, Morgan Freeman, and Michael Caine all were standout. Katie Holmes probably had the least impressive performance, but she was still fine in it. Tom Wilkinson, Gary Oldman, and Liam Neeson were all quality as well.

So how does this Batman translate differently than the past Batman experiences? Well, for one, Batman is now someone to truly be feared. And they play that up well. Fear is a major theme in the film, and the movie does an excellent job with suspense, Batman's movement (through the shadows, picking guys off one by one), and showing that Batman is, indeed, human. The man starts his day off, bumped, bruised and cut up, falling onto the floor and immediately doing push-ups. And what about the Batmobile? Let's say that it's a cross between a Hummer and a Ferrari, with a rocket strapped to the back of it. A fantastic chase scene is in it, as well as multiple action/fights scenes. Director Christopher Nolan has done an excellent job of balancing both action, drama, and comedy. And yes, there are quite a few funny moments. Special effects are sparse, but very well done. The FEAR gas is fricking perfect.

I'd definitely rate this as the best movie to come out this year. Yes, I loved Sin City, and any Star Wars movie will always have a place in my heart, but Batman Begins was incredibly well done. I can't wait for the sequel with the best comic book villain ever. I hope the rest of you enjoy it as much as I did.

Overall: 9.75/10
