This sounds like a really intriguing setting. Are you looking at a kind of alternate reality game (as in - how our Earth could have developed with a superman type leading the way for 40 years)?

Basically, yes. Arrived in the 50's, and quickly built a paradise that lasted to 2000. Take the future as we saw it in 1950, and that's kind of what resulted.

Connected with the Superman myth there was always the question of what would happen if we became too reliant on him, and always expected him to bail us out when we got in trouble. This world is a possible result. His loss was, in a word, catastrophic.

Y'know...for some reason, I am put in mind of "JLA: Frontiers" when I think of this, or at least the era & world in which this scenario started...

Also, I have to say: given this scenario ends up (from what I am reading between the lines) as a scenario with the supers on the "outside" of a society that no longer trusted them, and in fact was starting to turn on them - I can't see it ending up in a way much different than a scenario similar to "The Authority"...

Oh...also... I have guesses, but - who/what are Augments and The Unbound?

And, upon further reflection, I see a possible solution...or, hmm, maybe "alternative" is a better word - to the "The Authority" scenario...ask me about this tomorrow, I'm a little too foggy to be writing at this hour. ;}

Unbound: the name for spontaneous supers in the setting. Ys's arrival came with a cosmic radiation burst of the 4-color kind, sparking eruptions of powers through the populace. Whether or not there's any new Unbound appearing after Ys's death may be a plot point.

Augments: By the late 1960's, with Unbound thinkers and dreamers working their magic, science had advanced at a tremendous rate in limited fields. Augments are those who rival the Unbound in power, but get their abilities through technological, genetic, or accidental means unrelated to the Unbound phenomenon.
