Connected with the Superman myth there was always the question of what would happen if we became too reliant on him, and always expected him to bail us out when we got in trouble. This world is a possible result. His loss was, in a word, catastrophic.

Y'know...for some reason, I am put in mind of "JLA: Frontiers" when I think of this, or at least the era & world in which this scenario started...
Also, I have to say: given this scenario ends up (from what I am reading between the lines) as a scenario with the supers on the "outside" of a society that no longer trusted them, and in fact was starting to turn on them - I can't see it ending up in a way much different than a scenario similar to "The Authority"...

And, upon further reflection, I see a possible solution...or, hmm, maybe "alternative" is a better word - to the "The Authority" scenario...ask me about this tomorrow, I'm a little too foggy to be writing at this hour. ;}

Augments: By the late 1960's, with Unbound thinkers and dreamers working their magic, science had advanced at a tremendous rate in limited fields. Augments are those who rival the Unbound in power, but get their abilities through technological, genetic, or accidental means unrelated to the Unbound phenomenon.
