Name | Hanatarō Yamada
Series | Bleach (manga)
Canon Point | after being attacked by Rukia Kuchiki in Huedo Mundo (Chapter 301)
Reference |
He’s some kind of special.Hanataro is a small young man, barely a hundred pounds and five feet tall. His eyes are light blue, set on tan skin. He wears his black hair long, barely brushing his shoulders, matching his long bangs. He is often seen wearing not only the Shinigami uniform, but wearing the fourth division medical pack as well, which is full of various supplies for his healing techniques. He often has the nervous, unhappy expression on his face, with a limited facial changes (he can smile, but it’s not his neutral expression).
Just to note that his uniform may be ripped or bloodstained on arrival, as he was injured by a katana slash.
Personality |
Weak. A hindrance. An eyesore.
These are some of the words that may describe Hanataro at first sight. He is not a person that emits much in the way of confidence or competence. A person could even go as far as to call him a loser. He has cited that he’s “the most bullied kid in the world.” It does not help either that he is rather gullible, and an easy target for bullies, which rank form both his upperclassmen and from those below. It’s no wonder that Hanataro is as insecure as he is. In addition to this, his brother, Seinosuke Yamada, was once ranked Vice Captain.
There could be additional troubles from that due in part to what is said his brother’s bad character, and the power he wielded. It is unknown if Seinosuke was imprisoned or is even still alive at this point. But either way, Hanataro may feel that he has to become stronger than his brother ever was, or feels he has big shoes to fill. The bar is set high; it is possible that he will never be as strong in either prowess or will. It is little wonder that Hanataro is a quiet and humble young man. It is also little wonder that he harbors a potential inferiority complex.
Still, although he tends to be a nervous clumsy mess, Hanataro does have his strengths. He does not lash out against those who harm him or insult him; he scolds when he believes excessive force is used. He is flexible, intelligent, and will do whatever it takes to help his friends, even if it means enduring punishment. He does not tend to be the impulsive type if he can help it; instead, he thinks ahead, as to ascertain what would be best not for him, but for the entire group. If he thinks that a bad choice is being made, he’ll call them on it. He has a quiet courage, which is subtle, and harder to notice. That is unless the situation calls for him to stand up for what he believes in. Hanataro is insightful, knowledgeable of his surroundings and quick to analyze the hand he’s dealt with. He keeps his goals realistic and has the possibility for great growth as a person more assured of his worth to others. Most likely he will continue to stutter and to flail in the near future. However, Hanataro has finally begun to realize that he is worthwhile and his opinions matter. With such on his mind, he has began to take himself a little less seriously, and started to work on his weaknesses-such as his stamina and ability to fight.
Possessions | Medical pack, sword, and uniform.
Character Abilities/Powers |
Zanpakuto: Hisagomaru (a Katana with a blue handle and a circular guard with a brown sphere or bag attached to it. There is a gauge that goes up the blade, which will be explained below)
Power: When the blade touches the flesh of an injury, it is healed. At the same time, the gauge fills with a red gas/energy. Smaller wounds will barely fill the gauge at all, while Encroachment (the process of which a ghost becomes a Hollow) is great enough to instantly fill the gauge. When the meter on his blade fills up, the blade automatically goes into the second mode (Akeiro Hisagomaru, which is smaller, the size of a scalpel), and unleashes all the wounds absorbed onto the target Hanataro designates with a slashing movement. The attack is similar to a Cero (energy blast). After doing this once, Hanataro may attack again, not needing to heal further; however, it would be difficult, due to Akeiro Hisagomaru’s small size.
Healer: He is an above average healer, with the ability to restore the spiritual energy, and the ability for the body to function after injury. He uses, just like others of his company, treatments and techniques that could be compared to the human medical world. However, unlike the human world, he is able to heal his patients within a night, even hours of the trauma that has occurred.
Endurance: Considerable. He had to heal more than one person from the point of near death in the space of a few days, at least to the point they could defend themselves. As well, he was able to partake in a considerable amount of activity, and was able to keep on going despite only having a few hours sleep and a placebo for energy.
Swordsmanship: Though no expert by any means, he at least has the basics of sword to sword combat, in order to have attained some level of shikai.
Hand to hand combat: Currently unknown, and as such, considered nil.
Shunpo: Nil. Still Needs to walk everywhere, and needs to enhance his natural speed before being able to use it at all.
Kido: He is a proficient skill in
Kido. Hanataro has been known to use spells as high as the mid sixties. Whether he could do it higher is currently unknown, but should be considered to have at least some skill in defending himself.
Memorization: He was able to memorize the tunnels underneath Soul Society with ease, and has knowledge of where most supplies are kept. Once he knows a place or a technique, he is unlikely to forget.
Cleaning: I say this as he seems to have some ability to clean well, at least to the point of pleasing the nobility. He seems to know how to do regular house work. It would be likely that he would apply this to his medical abilities, as sterile environments are best for healing.
Sixth sense/Second sight/whatever may apply: Hanataro, as he is of the supernatural himself, is able to see ghosts, hollows, and other things clearly in the mundane world.
I understand at this time, that he will not be able to use his healing powers, unless he is granted a wish.
Weaknesses/Fears | Hanataro has few fears. It is not always obvious in his manner; he can be easily startled when it comes to pranks, sudden noises, and surprises. He also has evicted a fearful respect for certain captains when working against them, as he is well aware that he cannot stand a chance if he fought against them. However, that is by no means his greatest fear. That would be uselessness. If he cannot help his friends in any matter, how is he worthwhile? This likely means that Hanataro will panic once he understands he cannot use his powers to heal. They were his greatest worth, the best way that he could be of use to others. But he may eventually realize that there are other ways that he can help others out, and encourage his other skills to grow. Another big weakness would be his friends. He is willing to do whatever he can for them, even if he’s known them for a short while. It’s part of his ideals and in part because he has so few that care for him. He will conspire with others if they’re jailed. If he realizes they’re about to get in trouble, he will not leave his friends behind. At least, would not leave them behind if he can. He will stand up to whoever is hurting them, or about to hurt them, even if it makes him shake. In this way, he’ll do whatever he thinks is right-and that can be a weakness. It’s not that he isn’t rational or logical. But he is an idealist, and he’ll believe the best in people-which has been used against him. There is a reason why it has been stated more than once that he is gullible.
A bit of a quirk as well is his modesty. When praised, he’ll be honest, and downplay himself. Say he’s a great healer? He’ll tell you that he’s spent hours practicing on animals and that he really isn’t that great. He’ll tell you of better healers, and that he’s still working on it. It’s hard to tell, but it does seem to be genuine modesty, not embarrassment. It’s likely a lesson that was reinforced when he was younger, that there are better people then him out there, and close to him as well.
It’s hard to tell if Hanataro really has any pet peeves. He doesn’t like to be bullied, that’s true. But he’s used to it. He’s also used to being pushed around by stronger personalities. In order to deal with such problems, he normally rolls with the punches. Hanataro does not like rudeness towards others though. He does not like seeing disrespect towards his superiors, his equals, or his inferiors. Hanataro quietly stands up for the little guy more often than not-which can be considered an irony, as he is a man standing only at five feet. Normally, he does not stand up for himself. If he does wrong, he’ll admit it, and take his punishment, in whatever form it may be.

SAMPLES
First-person |
Um. Hello? Is this on? I….um. I’m sorry to be a bother! I just, I’m not sure w-what I should do now. That fellow was really nice about telling us what we have to do while we’re here. But I…I’m really confused.
I-is this normal? For people to be confused, I mean. Because I feel…very confused. About the mark, about why I’m here. H-ha-ha! I mean, there are so many people better for this.
D-don’t you think?
Third-person |
It was a beautiful place. Hanataro had to admit. No rush into battle. There was no need to wonder if someone was going to be hurt. It was peaceful. Like some kind of retirement. Hanataro wondered, yet again, if he was dead. He had asked that in a daze, when he saw the dried blood on his uniform. Arawen only smiled, and told him that he was, in fact, alive.
So it hadn’t been a figment of his imagination. His friend had cut him down. That…hurt inside. Even as he walked, the thought of Rukia being used again hurt his chest. She was such a gentle young noblewoman and yet…
He tried to turn away from the thought and admire the waterfall he discovered. When he had asked if everything was all right at home, he had been reassured by that smile. But there were some things that people could not say. The healer understood that. There were a lot of things he had yet to understand in his life. Like why people hurt others. Intellectually, he could understand why Aizen started the war, and planned to forge a key. He wanted to challenge himself and see if he could become even stronger. Hanataro wanted the same thing, but on a different scale. That was why emotionally, it made him feel scared and sick. He didn’t want to hurt people. Just the opposite, in fact. The shinigami stood for empowering and helping others in need, not turning them into fodder. The world had a too delicate balance for such disgusting way to use the souls of the living. To use the living as a tool was… it was unthinkable.
Hanataro let the cool water from the waterfall pool into his cupped palms, and he splashed his face. He jumped a little from the shock of the cold, but didn’t let it stop him from pooling yet more water into his outstretched palms. His mind flowed to another disturbing chain of thoughts. The invisible mark.
He had to use someone in order to keep it from darkening. He shook his head, feeling water drip against his cheek, and bead its way down, dripping off his chin. How could he use someone for sex? He wasn’t very good at it for one. At least, he wasn’t good as far as he knew. He was a small man that was in no way manly. His mouth thinned, and he sighed to himself as he splashed his face again.
He had no doubt that his cheek would become the blackest on the Attollo.
