I saw the Golden Compass yesterday.. And I really rather liked it.
I think the best part about the movie was the anti-religion factor. The first thing the movie tells you is that there are other universes - which basically equates to an alternative explanation as to how we came about... Meaning an alternative to God.
Then the Magesterium(?) is centuries old, and has been teaching all that time, all the while trying incredibly hard to stamp anything that opposes them. Enter Asriel.
I know the actors have flatly denied any anti-church undercurrents, but come on. Let's face it. They only said the book was 'toned down'.
The above is only one reason as to why I plan to read the books. Now.
I also really loved the quality of the CGI. And I absolutely loved the daemons. Pan and Stelmaria were fantastic. And how they glittered! That was so cool!
I loved Asriel (didn't see that coming). The whole rebel against the Magesterium/explorer/person who has a snow leopard daemon for god's sake... Just a shame there wasn't more of him.
Which leads me to tangent #1. I was bad enough when Daniel Craig walked on screen for just a few minutes. I wonder how I'll be when the Bond 22 comes out... >.>
Mrs Coulter freaked me out.. (Also had me thinking Asriel slept with that?!) But somehow I'm thinking that was the idea. Which means Nicole Kidman did her job well.
Lyra was good too. And the ice bears were brilliant. (See above comment re. CGI)
The only thing I didn't like about it was the fact that, I thought, it was a little too short. I personally have no problems with long movies. Casino Royale goes for over two hours. Peter Jackson's re-do of King Kong went for what, three hours? And I really liked that. I don't think it would have hurt to stretch it out and make it less cluttered.
I was going to post a little piece I wrote before I went away, but, quite frankly, I can't be bothered. Sorry.
Oh. Good. School in a few days. I'm so not looking forward to it.. And I haven't done some of my holiday homework...
Hope everyone is good.
