LJ Back! SG1 Book Review, etc.

May 26, 2007 07:58

I'm hard at work finishing my sd_ficathon story for hoshi_reed and it's coming along nicely. I hope to finish today and send it off for beta.

In the meantime, I wrote a partial book review for the SG-1 tie-in novel A Matter of Honor on Thursday night, but was unable to post it. Fortunately, I saved it, so I'm posting it now.

Oh yeah, I forgot that she wrote one. I think Sally Malcolm was actually Sally Reeve in fanfic, and she really did write long, involved Sam/Jack stories. I found them quite engaging. Maybe a little cliche in places, but the rest of the story often made up for that. And because of her preferences I'm not surprised that Daniel might have seemed a bit weak in contrast to the others. She never treated any of the characters badly, she just focused in on Sam and Jack the most. The hint of UST makes sense too, and, well, I would think the publishers would be okay with that anyway since that's what we get in the show.

I'd like to read this one! :)

No problem, I'll send it to you when I'm done :)

I have to say that so far, the book feels really well-balanced between the team members and POVs. It doesn't feel Jack or Sam-centric at all. Sure, there are scenes between them, but also between Sam and Daniel and all the other permutations, too. In fact, Sam and Daniel work together quite a bit as the two scientists of the team.

I've found nothing to complain about with this book. Not at all.

Looks like the sequel is book 5, "The Cost of Honor."

When I was over at my parents' house yesterday, I noticed that my mom is reading "Survival of the Fittest", book 7.

I find it sort of odd that they broke it up. The books are really quite short - only a couple of hundred pages. They could have easily kept it as one volume.

On the other hand, it probably has to do with actual economies of printing. These little books are probably pretty cheap to print and making a thicker volume more expensive. I remember that being a factor in why The Stand was originally pared down so much. It'd cost too much to print a thicker book.

Hee! Guess I'm in good company with your mom!
