[When the device is activated, the camera comes on as well, moving around as though attached to something. Its view is blocked a moment by a black-gloved hand, and then the device is brought up, the video function switching out for text.]

Interesting. If this is the Nothingness to which Nobodies return, I must confess I find it rather mundane. I certainly was not expecting a ruined city, or a network of interlinked communication devices.
