My review of "Pirates: At World's End", which I saw tonight with the lovely
soulfire00. WARNING- I spoil pretty much all the major plot points.
-I just knew Jack was going to come out on top in some way at the end. I really thought the ending brought the trilogy together, with all the throwbacks to "Curse of the Black Pearl"- Gibbs and Jack repeating the "Take what you can, give nothing back" line, Jack losing his ship and sailing off to some new destination, humming "A Pirate's Life For Me". The ending was very satisfying, though I thought Will got a really raw deal- he has to captain the Dutchman and be separated from Elizabeth, eternally being at sea. She has the Pearl and is still Pirate King, Jack has his map to the Fountain of Youth, Barbossa has his life and his crew.
-That said, like in "Dead Man's Chest", my biggest problem with the movie is I couldn't understand what the hell was going on half the time. It seemed like background noises/music drowned out dialogue a lot, and of course characters' accents (especially Tia Dalma) made it hard to understand some bits. There were also all the confusing plans, agreements, accords and so on that went on between the characters. It was hard to keep straight until the very end of the movie, and I hated how they kept Tia Dalma/Calypso's fate or wherabouts unanswered as well. I'll need to see it again or wait for the DVD.
-I also really hated Will's characterization this movie, which says something given his comparatively limited screentime. He didn't strike me as the traitor type, even if he DID want his father back, because in the first two movies he was very fiercely loyal to Jack and Elizabeth.
-It REALLY FUCKING SUCKED THAT NORRINGTON DIED. >:o He grew on me upon a rewatch of the first one, especially taking into account the deleted scene on the DVD. I also hated that Elizabeth's father got killed off for pretty much no reason- it was heart-wrenching watching her try to save him as they sailed back from the Land of the Dead.
-A note to Disney: The "Why is the rum gone?!" line was only funny in the first movie because it was unexpected. Like in "Dead Man's Chest", there was really no need to include the joke once more.
-Good point #1: Humour, especially Pintel and Ragetti, who continue to be my favorite characters. I loved how Ragetti's wooden eye turned out to be Barbossa's piece of eight, and he was carving himself a new one through the rest of the movie. And of course, the scene of them trying to catch a peek at Elizabeth was gold. I also love how the two guards, who also appeared in the first movie, ended up on Jack/Barbossa's crew. Oh, and Barbossa and Jack's little telescope comparisons... yeah. NOT SLASHY AT ALL. And Jack's hallucination of a ship full of clones of himself.
-Good point #2: The last half hour or so. The fight in the whirlpool was superbly done, and I wasn't expecting Will to nearly die. I was hoping Jack would get to be immortal and maybe the movie end with a flash-forward scene of him in today's age. But he sacrificed his chance to save Will's life.
-Good point #3: KEEF! I squealed aloud when Keith Richards appeared on screen as Jack's father. His brief appearance was great.
-Good point #4: Elizabeth. I still can't understand why Sao Hong made her captain- he had no real reason to trust her judgment as a captain, or believe his men would obey her- but she kicked some major ass in this movie. I love how they called her Pirate King instead of Queen.
-Overall: Though confusing, still a solid and entertaining movie and a good end to the trilogy. Still not as good as the original, but I liked this a lot better than "Dead Man's Chest".
