Day Two

“Rise and shine England! Today is going to be awesome!”

England was jolted awake by the loud exclamation and the sudden unzipping of his sleeping bag causing cold morning air to attack the skin that was exposed by his pajamas.

“What time is it?” he muttered groggily.

“Six a.m.! The sun is just coming up! It’s beautiful!” said America, shaking England by the shoulders, “C’mon the water is ready for your tea and everything!” With that he disappeared from the room and the sound of the screen door echoed as it slammed. England at the doorway, wondering if his death glare would make it through to the back of America’s head. He sighed, America always had been a morning person. He pulled a sweater on over his pajamas and went and attended to the tea pot that was whistling from the camp stove. Tea in hand he joined America in the camping chairs on the porch. He watched the sun peak over the mountains, grateful that America had woken him up for the spectacular view.

It really was quite a sight, the mist was just starting to lift out of the valley bottom, with the sun just starting to creep over the peaks. The growing sunlight created a mosaic of brightness and darkness.

“Look!” America whispered, pointing. England looked in the direction of the outstretched limb to a mother mule deer and her fawn. She was quietly grazing with her baby standing beside her in all of its innocence.

“How old do you think?” asked America.

“Probably not too old, he’s pretty small.”

America grinned at him. England watched as he turned away from him closing his eyes and inhaling the morning scent. England took a deep breath himself. The crisp morning air was filled with the smell of dew, pines, and various other plants that England did not have a name for. It mixed in with the scent of his tea, creating a smell unique to this place.

“When you’re finished with that and get dressed we can head out, we want to be up there early so we don’t catch any afternoon storms.” He grinned and went inside to make a light breakfast and load stuff into the car. England remained on the porch in the dawn quiet for a few more minutes before making his way indoors to get dressed. The smell of this place was growing on him, even the smell of the wood in the cabin felt warm and inviting to him. England ate the bowl of oatmeal America had left for him and joined him outside, climbing back into the passenger side of the car.

“So where is it, we’re going again?” he asked as America got behind the wheel and pulled out of the parking space. The dirt of the road crunched beneath their wheels, America had rolled down the windows and a mountain breeze was blowing through the car.

“We’re going to drive up Old Fall River road up to the alpine tundra! Don’t remember the UN meeting when we declared it a biosphere?”

“Was I at that one? No one goes to all of them.”

“I thought so...”

“Well, then I suppose I don’t remember.”

“You will when you see it!” England looked at him sidelong, a small smile breaking on his face. America looked so excited and happy today. He also looked really handsome, his hair blowing in the breeze from the open window and his sunglasses perched on his nose. England managed to tear his eyes away as the forested road they were driving on broke into a meadow treating him to a spectacular view. The green, flat-bottomed valley gave way to granite peaks soaring above them. A river ran through the center, a few anglers already there hoping to catch some fish.

“Beautiful...” slipped out of his mouth. America grinned, pleased with England’s reaction.

Each curve along the road was a new scene, a new breathtaking sight. The forest and the mountains seemed to stretch on forever. Eventually the trees began to get smaller and more twisted, and not long they were above tree line. It was a different world up there, fields that seemed to float among the clouds.

America pulled off along the road near an old rock wall, he explained that it had been put up by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. America gestured that he should sit on the rock wall with him, when they got out of the vehicle. The air was a little cold, the breeze up here much more intense than it was in the valley. England sat down close to him, their shoulders touching. “What are we looking at?”

“Watch the rocks!” America said, pointing down at the piles of shale that littered the field on the other side of the wall. Suddenly a fat animal waddled out between the rocks. “Marmot!”

England smiled bemusedly at the creature, he had seen them before in other places but they were always entertaining creatures. Nearby a pika squeaked, announcing its presence to the larger creature. England smiled at the little animal, they were quite cute. He watched the grey and brown fluff balls as they scurried about their business gathering grasses so that they would be able to survive the long winters on the mountain peaks. America nudged England on the shoulder, “Ready to move on?”

England nodded loading back into the car, the clouds were starting to clear by this point as they moved on. The landscape was fantastic. America pointed out the different peaks and how it was possible to see over a hundred miles on a clear day from some of them. England felt warm in the enthusiasm that America had for his own lands, and was happy that he was sharing something so intimate with him. They continued to drive along the road until it dipped below treeline again, driving down into another large valley. England watched as the wilderness faded back into civilization. They were now in a town.

“Welcome to Grand Lake!” America parked and gestured for him to get out.

“An ice cream shop?”

“One of the best ones around!” America was practically hopping with excitement. England smiled. They walked down to the lake with their cones. “Are you having fun yet?”

England looked at him, “I think you are making it extremely difficult for me to sulk.”

America laughed.

England just smiled.
