“We’re going to have to be ourselves in order to save him.”
“I understand.”
It was a difficult. Ahiru understood fully that in order to break out of the story that Drosselmeyer had trapped everyone in, they would need to surprise him. They would need to defy the fates he had written for them. To help Mytho she needed to do what she could after she game him the last heart shard. Even though she had accepted it, each of her steps felt leaden. Every step was leading her toward becoming a duck again, nothing more than a bird. What would her life be like now? Who would she be as a duck? Where would her home be?
Her body felt old. The terror began gripping her again. All of the pain and sadness that had driven her into the lake in the first place. Fakir had quelled it, not destroyed it. The fear of becoming nothing settled around her heart like a vice. She could cease to be herself over the next hour. Ahiru felt like ice, the only thing that was keeping her warm was Fakir’s hand holding hers. That hand was pulling her forward. She focused on that warmth, twining her fingers with his and gripping his hand more tightly. The lead in her feet were weighing her down, the anchor of his hand was the only thing keeping her moving. She stumbled. Ahiru could not make herself get back up.
“Ahiru, there isn’t time!”
“I know! I can’t move, I don’t know if I can do this, Fakir!” Fakir’s face softened immediately and he knelt beside her and wrapped his arms around her. The cold fear that gripped her body began melting in his warmth. Ahiru couldn’t believe that she had ever thought him cold-hearted, he was warm.
“I believe in you. You can do this.” he whispered into her hair.
“I’m afraid. Who am I going to be after tonight? Where am I going to live? What’s...”
“I promised I would stay with you didn’t I?” he interrupted.
“Yes, but there are just so many things I’ll never get to do when I am a duck. I’ll never get to dance on stage or go to the theater, eat pizza, or get kissed...” Her panicked babbling was cut short as Fakir covered her lips with his own. Their kiss was inexperienced and awkward, but full of caring. Ahiru kissed him back, her mind rushing with emotions.
“I believe in you, I will always stay with you.” He was giving her that look, the one he only showed when they were alone. That soft look he had when his guard was down. She reached out to touch his face, the ice receding even further, she kissed him and he responded back to her. With every gentle touch the ice broke around her heart, the fear flowing out of her. When their kiss broke she looked into his eyes.
“You’ll really stay with me?”
“Of course I will. After this last fight we’ll go home.”
“Okay.” The lead drained out of her feet as he pulled her up into another hug. She was going to be able to go home and be with Fakir. She would have to trust in that fact. That they could save Mytho and then go home. And perhaps, someday, they could defy fate once again.
