Summary: Modern Day. Japan had come a few days early to visit with America before Christmas, but his boyfriend is spending all day out in the yard...
"Japan! Put on your coat and meet me outside in a few minutes!" America yelled from the front of the house. Japan paused the movie he was watching and set his warm mug of tea on the table. He crawled out from under the warm blanket and stretched. He had come out a few days early to spend some time with his boyfriend before Christmas, but America had spent the last two days outside doing something to the house. Japan wasn't even quite sure what it was he was doing out there, only that he would crawl into bed beside him at night smelling like snow, dust, and woodworking. He would always just say, "You'll get to see soon, Japan."
Japan pulled his coat off the rack and began pulling it on. He opened the door and America waved him over. He was holding a wad of electrical plugs and extension cords. "What is all this, America?" he asked. The sun was just beginning to set and some of the other houses along the street were beginning to light up their holiday decorations. Japan squinted at the wooden shapes that were on the lawn and roof. He couldn't quite make out what they were supposed to be.
"I did it for you since we were spending Christmas together! I wanted to make it awesome! It's going to be totally amazing!. America was grinning so widely, that Japan could help but feel some of the excitement that was practically oozing off the other.
With a flourish and an improvised drum roll America pressed the "on" switch displayed prominently at the top where the wires were connected.
And nothing happened.
"What!" America dropped the pile of cords in Japan's hands. "Hold this! I'll be right back!"
Before Japan could reply, America disappeared back into the garage. Japan looked down at the tangle in his hands. He looked over the connections and unplugged a few to untangle them. America was always so hasty when he was building something he grew too excited about.
"Okay, Japan!" I think I got it!" America called out from the house. As Japan pushed the last plug back in the house suddenly lit up with a flash. Japan blinked the brightness out of his eyes and gasped at the lights. They were beautiful. America had draped the house with twinkling white lights and various shapes. The light reflected prettily on the snow. America came back out looking triumphant. "What do you think?" he asked, throwing an arm around Japan's shoulder.
"It looks won---"
"No, wait! It's not all on yet!" America pulled the electrical cords from Japan's hands and fiddled with them until something else lit up. Now Japan could see that the wooden shapes had lights too and that they weren't just shapes, it was a verified homage to so many popular shows and films that it would have taken him an hour to list them. Some were even his own shows. "Awesome right?"
Japan nodded and smiled at him. America grinned back and stole a kiss.
