“What?”

“You heard me. Do you want to go to the ball with me?”

When she stood completely still and just looked at him he sighed. “You know, the Yule Ball, dancing. You are supposed to go with someone and I want you to go with me.”

“Sure.” A little smiled played on Daphne’s lips as she turned her back on Zacharias and walked away.

He watched her. She could feel it. She pretended not to notice. She didn’t want to give him the satisfaction of knowing she thought about him. Tracy teased her about him, but she understood that it was friendly. The comments she had gotten from Draco and his comrades were a different story. They hurt and this reassured her that her answer to Zacharias was the right one. She had never been the one to back away when things got difficult.

---

She had turned down a boy today. He had been waiting for her after dinner and asked her to go to the ball with him. She knew his name was Michael, she thought she had seen him play quiddich for Ravenclaw once.

She liked her dress. It was silver with yellow trim and she loved it because of what it symbolized. The silver showed that she was a Slytherin and she was proud of that. It also showed that she thought it was nice to blend the Slytherin silver with some of Hufflepuffs yellow. Not too much mind, but a little. She wanted to show that she didn’t care about blood purity, but was still proud to be a Slytherin. They were so much more than what some of her stupid housemates thought. She turned around and smiled satisfied at herself in the mirror. She was satisfied and she hoped Zacharias was too.

Zacharias waited impatiently in the entrance hall. Why were girls always late? He tapped hisHe turned around, scanning the room once more, and finally saw her. She was standing with a friend away from the others. She laughed, and it was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen. Her face lit up and her eyes sparkled Halfher hair was pinned up, but the rest was falling down her bare back. The dress she was wearing was low-cut and ended at her ankles. He took her in with his eyes and thought she looked like an angel in silver and gold.

She turned her gaze towards him and captured his eyes. Then she smiled and made her way to him. It wasn’t until later, when they were dancing, that he noticed that her dress wasn’t gold, but yellow.
