Alec breezed into the diner like he didn't have a care in the world. For once it was almost true.
At least until he was three feet past the door and then something cold crawled up the inside of his spine. There was only a slight hesitation in his steps that would only be noticed by someone who knew him pretty well. It wasn't the same sort of aweful bone freezing feeling that came with ghosts, but it deffinatly wasn't normal. He sniffed the air carefully and subtly as his eyes skimmed the place casually. It was faint under the smell of coffee and bacon but it was there. A scent that was just off. Sulfur. Matches with out wood. And male.
Breakfast was going to be full of mystery and curiosity.
Dean noticed Alec slow, but he wasn't going to call much attention to it -- not until they sat down. Instead, they just followed politely behind the waitress until they reached the table, and Dean slid into the booth across from him, ordering himself a coffee and looking down at the menu.
The angle of Alloces table allowed him to watch for marks as they came into the room, but it also allowed him to watch for something else as well. He was relatively certain that he'd found it when the two men who were relatively similar in feature came into the room. They had to be brothers, there was really no other logical explanation for it on this plane, and while one, the younger of the two, was different in a way that was just interesting -- something he would like to play with if he had the time -- the older one was the one that would set worry into the back of any sane demon's mind
( ... )
Busted! Thank Manticore for kitty hearing. He had figured he could pinpoint the scent if they moved past the person, so he had a fifty/fifty shot of the waitress heading the right way. If he couldn't pin down the scent at least he knew which side of the diner it was at.
But they pasted the dude that smelled like sulfur. The closer he got the most he got the feeling that he wasn't the only predator here. It was confirmed when the man who, according to the waitress, had been ready to leave now convieniently wanted pancakes.
Which actually sounded really really good. So he orddered some with his coffee and glass of milk. Then he had to sort out what was going on with something hunting the hunters. He licked a jelly packet while he thought.
Dean leaned back in the booth once the waitress started walking away, still not having decided what he wanted quite yet. How Alec had decided relatively quickly, Dean would never know, but there were far too many options on this menu for him to decide in five seconds.
After being on the road with him for a while, however, Dean knew when something was on the kid's mind, so he looked up after a moment, pausing only slightly to flip through the menu. "Got something on your mind?"
Alloces hadn't really mastered the art of casual yet. Not when he was hunting, and certainly not when he was encountering a new behavior that wasn't quite -- normal. Or, at least, what he'd come to grasp in his short time back on the Earth again as normal. Now he was sure there was probably some sort of logic behind it, but it was a logic that he wasn't quite grasping.
Why would someone just lick the jelly out of a packet? Weren't you supposed to eat jelly with things?
This conundrum of sorts was what lead to Alloces staring at the younger of the two in a rather stalkerish manner. He didn't really have the concept that it wasn't polite to stare down yet, and so until he figured out exactly why he was doing what he was doing, he was watching.
Alec knew normal behavior like not staring. He knew a lot of things like that. He just didn't always choose to use those behaviors. Behaviors like not licking jelly packets.
"Someone weird." He didn't bother being all hushed with the statement, as the dude was staring at him. He was sublte about pulled out the book of matched with the diners name on it from the back of the table. He flipped it open and flicked a nail at the head of the match.
Then he stared right back at the guy flat and cat like. Like 'yeah, I see you, what's the deal.' Occasionall he gave a lazy blink while still licking the jelly packet. Apple was his favorite.
Dean glanced back over his shoulder in the direction that Alec was staring, following the line of his eyes to where the man was sitting. Alec was right, the way the guy was staring was not only weird but really freakin' creepy, and there was something about him that was just -- off. He wasn't sure if it was something wrong in the head or what, but he wasn't all there, and Dean wasn't sure if he wanted to find out why.
Alloces also didn't really grasp the concept of things getting awkward if someone caught you staring at them. He also didn't mind meeting the Jelly Licker's stare as he tried to stare him down. There was something about him that wasn't the same as all the other humans -- something complicated. There was a bit more than a hunter lurking inside him, and Alloces was curious as to what that could possibly be.
However, the dynamic changed when the hunter turned to look at him. The hunter wasn't pleased, and while Alloces would normally have no problem tearing him limb from limb for trying to tell him what to do, he knew better than to do that here, in a public place. So he took one last glance at Alec, before averting his eyes back to the table again, just as he had been before.
His eyes landed on the jelly packet in front of him, and he tilted his head to the side slightly, studying it, trying to figure out if there was any other information his meat suit wasn't giving him.
Alec couldn't help the smugness that curled through his belly as the other man looked away first. Feline dominance issues. He turned back to Dean, perfectly cheerful, though he did tap the matches again and raised an eyebrow in question. Did Dean know the dude smelled like sulfur. What did that mean?
As soon as he got his answers he'd see what else he wanted from the menu.
Dean tilted his head to the side slightly when Alec gestured to the matches, and then the confusion changed to a look of worry as he turned his hand, palm up, his fingers curling so that his thumb was pointing in the direction of the guy who had been staring at them earlier.
Alloces had lost interest in the hunters' conversation, believing they were not talking of anything of consequence. While there was something about the elder of the two that seemed familiar, he wasn't going to push the matter, as he clearly did not want to pick a fight.
Yet.
Instead he went to work of ordering the various packets and containers in front of him, placing them in a pattern that probably made sense only to him, while he waited for his pancakes to arrive.
"Nothing good," Dean said as his eyes narrowed and he turned back to face the guy sitting at the table. He watched him for a minute, before speaking again, hoping that this wouldn't work.
Most demons could manage to get their flinch response under control so that it wasn't quite as violent within a week or two of coming topside. It was really just a matter of practice. Alloces, on the other hand, tended not to be able to suppress things when he didn't see them coming, and this moment happened to be one of them.
The shudder ran through him like he was being electrocuted, forcing his body to tense slightly and shake it off. Once it was over, his eyes narrowed slightly, flashing a blood red before finally speaking to the two hunters.
Alec was startled. By both of them. "Whoa, okay, what's with the religion and seizure time in middle America." He didn't move, and he wasn't going to attack, but he would defend. His fingers flexed like he had claws and he coiled, ready for whatever came.

And occasionally sipping his coffee.

"He smells like sulfur?"
Because that was never a good sign.

"Bad move."
