Chapter 18:

It looked like there were millions of them.

So many fans that loved and supported them, fans that stood by them through the most torturous phases of their lives;

And today would be the last time he would ever see them again.

He felt all his senses heighten with the pulsating beat of the music and the euphoria of screaming fans.

He never wanted to lose this feeling, never wanted to stop striving to become the best version of himself, but knew that it was time that he had to. Time…time...everything always came down to time…either too much of it or too little...

"CASSIOPEIA!!"

There.

The screams, escalating like the climactic moment in an orchestra of turbulent music, filling him with a sense of complete and utter being;

And thereby, making everything that much harder.

He sighed and smiled somewhat mockingly when he felt his hyungs put their hands on his back, urging him on and telling him to "go for it".

He straightened his shoulders and provided his fans with his signature grin, putting his index finger on his lips, telling them quiet down.

When there was silence, Min’s grin slowly faded into a smile full of deep sadness. He held the mike to his mouth and silently watched the people who had supported him for years, their love never wavering and their hearts always beating in time with their music.

He closed his eyes and asked the one question he knew they’d never expect, the one question that would be the be all and end all of his career,

“What would all of you do, if I told you’ll, that today is the last time you will ever see me again? That after today Max Changmin will cease to exist…?”

He felt Jaejoong flinch beside him and heard a chorus of shouts ranging from “What’s wrong, oppa?” to “We’ll die without you.”

He smiled humorlessly, “You guys shouldn’t take your lives for granted; not everyone has a choice in whether they want to live or die. Saying that you would die...don’t you think that that’s a little immature? Do you think I would ever forgive myself if that happened to any of you?”

Looking at the pained and self-depreciating expression on his face, the fans felt something inside them snap.

Most of them had guessed. Some felt their eyes tearing up and they watched as others croaked out his name as if begging him to stop joking with them.

Min felt tears trail down his own cheeks as he looked on at their pleading faces, wanting to stop them from feeling the pain that he knew they were bound to feel.

There’s no going back.

“For the past four months, I’ve held a secret. I wanted to fight something that I knew was impossible to fight. I wanted to be able to live my dream to its fullest extent and I wanted to do it together with all of my hyungs and with all of you.”

“The secret that I desperately held from the world is the fact that I have terminal cancer and that I don’t have that much time left. In fact, I barely even have a month.” He sighed and wiped his tears away, “Today is my last concert as a member of Dong Bang Shin Ki, as well as a singer.”

They were all speechless.

He watched as some of them slid down to their knees and others put their hands over their mouths, each of them trying to suppress their own torturous emotions.

He looked at them all, his eyes red with tears and smiled.

“I hope you’ll always remember that I love you guys. I love you’ll very, very much and I want to be able to leave this world knowing that you will forever be by Dong Bang Shin Ki’s side. That is my final request to you all…”

“Cassiopeia is a constellation of five stars… However, in actuality there is a sixth, hidden star. That sixth star is a combination of ALL of you. You guys are the reason why TVXQ shines; you are the life source and guiding light to our music. We would not exist if it weren’t for you and I hope you will always remember that.”

He paused to wipe his tears once again and laughed, “When I die, I don’t want you’ll to stop believing in Dong Bang Shin Ki. No matter where I am or in whatever shape or form, my soul will always and forever be part of this band and a part of you. When you look up at the stars and search for Cassiopeia, I will be star that shines the brightest amongst them and I will always watch over you and the band.”

He scanned the red ocean in front of him and smiled, knowing that their fan club was filled with the epitome of unconditional love and that he had nothing more to fear.

“Will you’ll protect Dong Bang Shin Ki? Will you promise me, that you will always stay by its side? Will you always remain the unyielding ocean of dreams and stay united as the knights of the Rising Gods of the East? Will you protect what’s important to me?”

The fans stared at the young boy before them, letting his warm, tired voice wash over them. They all wanted to reach out and hold him tight in their embrace and protect him. However, as they looked on, they could all sense an aura of other worldliness about him. It was as if Max Changmin had solved the greatest riddle that life had to offer. It was as if he had become so much greater; as if he had become so much more.

So much more unreachable.

When they heard his final request, they felt their hearts bleed. Some buried their heads in their friends’ shoulders and others covered their faces, each of them trying to deny the truth.

They waited for him to get up and tell them that he was joking, but he never did.

They knew then that it was time to accept the inevitable and when they did they all shouted a hoarse, “YES!”

They knew that at this point they would do ANYTHING for him.

Changmin smiled the happiest smile they’d seen in years, “Thank you...”
“So, my last song, will you all sing it with me?”

They nodded and watched as the five of them stood in the center of the stage, with Changmin in the middle.

For the last time as five.

They felt their hearts tumble when they heard the beginning of the said “final song” and realised that it was the song that signified the epitome of DBSK’s unison.

In Heaven.

They had nothing more to say. So they cried. They cried for the boy who always gave his all and cried for everything lost and so much gained.

For him, they would always fight.

For him, they would always protect.

For him, they would never let DBSK die.

For him, they would help the other four rise up above the status of the Gods of the East.

For him, they would forever be their guiding light,

And for him, they would forever love.

Dong Bang Shin Ki would live on.

Choikang Changmin would live on.

Max Changmin would live on.

Shim Changmin would live on.

They would make sure of it.

Cassiopeia would make sure of it.

We will always protect our other halves.

Until the end of time.
