empires @ reggie's 5/18/08

May 20, 2008 10:30

So I saw this band called Empires on Sunday night. I kind of dig these guys, and by that I mean they are absolutely precious ridiculous DORKS.

I got to the venue around 7:30 and promptly ran into the internet. The lead singer for the opening band, Walrus, had his hearse (named "Victoria") parked out front. He chatted us up for a while both outside and inside the venue; he quizzed me and photonegative on women's accessories, and I asked if we needed to bust out the Pictionary to show him what leotards and shawls looked like. It was random and hilarious.

They let us inside around 8-ish, and the internet promptly stood in front of the stage, even though nobody else was there. After a few minutes, Sean Van Vleet came out of the back, waved at us, and then zoomed on over without prompting to say, "Hi, I recognize all of your faces! I love you guys! What've you been doing?" Sean's still sick, still wants to be an English teacher, and thinks you're never too old for school!

Oh, Empires. They come up to us to talk and hug and gleeface, talk to us from stage, and beam at us when we heckle them as they're setting up their gear. What's not to love? Ryan J. Luciani high-fived the internet. Sean told us he loved us again. Max Steger didn't wear a hoodie and talked with the laydeez, and WE ALL NOTICED, MAX, TWO THUMBS UP. Tom Conrad wore pinstriped pants and flip-flops and smiled and didn't get their next concert date wrong. Sean said Al had a joke to tell but Al refused, and I think it must've been a pretty nast joke if sketchy Al Smith doesn't want to go there. Sean announced that Ryan's parents were there, and Ryan waved his drumstick and yelled, "I love you, Mom!"

They had to cut the setlist one song short because Sean's voice was going. Poor boo. After the show, Empires and the internet were all smished together by the merch table. I was standing behind Sean Van Vleet and making faces at amatia when he took her phone and talked to seanarenay ♥♥♥. They were all huggy and "HI WE LOVE YOU GUYS OMG THANK YOU FOR COMING TO SEE US." It was pretty adorable.

Doooorrrrks. I'll be at their next show on June 4.
