Apparently it has been a year since I last posted incredibly short reviews of stuff what Netflix had sent me. Dude! Where does the time go?
2046: I am not entirely sure what this movie is about. And by "not entirely" I mean "not at all." Which is a problem.
All Over the Guy: I can't decide if I like the framing device. What I do know is that Richard Ruccolo is hot in it. It's warm and funny, and only hit my embarrassment squick the once.
Alphaville: I had never seen this film, and I knew I needed to watch it at least once! It's insane and surreal (and I would also add misogynistic!), and unfortunately, still politically relevant.
Big Eden: Dawww. I love this movie. I just want to pet Eric Schweig and feed him cupcakes.
Boa vs. Python: Oh, shut UP. You know I did it for the Hewlett! And I solemnly swear that I fast-forwarded through any scene without the sexy Hewlett or a giant snake killing some stupid people.
Blow Dry: Dear Alan Rickman, Will you marry me? Love, shrift.
Brokeback Mountain: I didn't go see this in the theater, and it took me a while to actually see it when it came out on DVD. It has its flaws, but visually, it's a gorgeous movie, and wow, did the ending gut me like a fish.
The Broken Hearts Club: I liked this movie. Dean Cain! Zach Braff! Timothy Olyphant being able to emote like a normal person unlike the incredibly repressed Seth Bullock! I almost didn't recognize him.
The City of Lost Children: It's like a vivid, gorgeous, ugly, terrifying nightmare.
Donnie Darko: Seriously, you have to watch it at least once for the demonic rabbit!
Garden State: Smart and unconventional, and a little surreal.
Get Real: I liked it all right, even if it was a bit melodramatic and cliched.
Gorgeous: Oh, sweet Jesus, this was bad. In a hilarious way. Jackie Chan is the mopey romantic Harlequin-style lead. Snork. Qi Shu is very charming, but oh my GOD, she can't save this movie and its interminable fight scenes.
Grave of the Fireflies: Horrible and moving, and I never want to see it again.
Hard Boiled: Reason #1 to watch: starring Chow Yun-Fat as Detective Tequila. Reason #2: his co-star is Tony Leung.
Hedwig and the Angry Inch: I loved it. It's hilarious and wonderful, and I generally don't like musicals.
Hellboy: I do love Ron Perlman in almost everything, but I was "meh" on this movie. It was an okay film. I mean, it's not like I'm calling it "The Chronicles of Riddick" or anything!
Hidalgo: The story of a dude and his horse. It was entertaining enough. It felt a little like an old-school adventure movie. Loved the horse.
I Heart Huckabees: I liked this movie more than I was expecting to! Although I would like it if my brain would stop saying that Albert and Brad are totally meant for each other, because I don't think I can take it.
Kiki's Delivery Service: Miyazaki! A young witch moves to the big city. Love.
Knight Hunters (Volume 1-5): Oh, Weiß Kreuz. Hot florists by day, sexy assassins by night. I just can't make this shit up. Thank you for the crack, anime!
Latter Days: It's a good, little movie about a young Mormon missionary falling in love with another man. It's not perfect, but it totally got to me, anyway.
The Legend: I seem to have erased this from my memory. All I can tell you is that it has Jet Li, and horrifyingly bad dubbing.
Lewis Black: Unleashed: Oh, Lewis Black. I love you.
The Memory of a Killer / De Zaak Alzheimer: This is a movie about a hit man who is losing his memory. How awesome is that? There are also some pretty Belgian detectives who fight crime.
Mystery Science Theater 3000: Attack of the Giant Leeches: Giant. Leeches. That look like dudes in trash bags. I may never recover.
Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Crawling Hand: Not nearly as funny as Teenagers From Outer Space or Attack of the Leeches, but still funny.
Mystery Science Theater 3000: Eegah!: I mean, MST3K is funny always, yes, but sometimes the movies are so BIZARRE. Like this one.
Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Girl in Gold Boots: Oh. My god. I don't even know what to tell you except that you have to see it for yourself.
Mystery Science Theater 3000: Gunslinger: Joel and the 'bots take on Roger Corman. Oh dear.
Mystery Science Theater 3000: I Accuse My Parents: Ha ha ha! *facepalm* Oh my god, truck farming.
Pi: Faith in Chaos: So, so, so, so disturbing.
Princess Mononoke: Beautiful and amazing and unsettling.
Punk: Attitude: Rockumentary of punk!
Rashomon: Because clearly I needed to watch Kurosawa's original in order to fully understand all the cultural references.
Second Sight
Series 1 and
Series 2: Clive Owen plays an alcoholic, divorced detective who is going blind. Love love love.
Spirited Away: It's wonderful! If you haven't seen any Miyazaki, go go go!
The Station Agent: Oh, I loved this movie! Peter Dinklage is awesome! And I kind of want Joe to find a nice Cuban boy to settle down with!
The Talented Mr. Ripley: I couldn't watch this movie. It just kept punching my embarrassment squick buttons so hard that I had to turn it off and walk away.
Threesome: I liked it, but to be honest, I had to suspend my disbelief that Josh Charles would be attracted to Stephen Baldwin. Is anyone attracted to Stephen Baldwin?
The Transporter: Big fun action movie yay Jason Statham!
Wilde: Oh, Stephen Fry, how I love you. I don't love this movie as much as I love you, but that would be difficult, wouldn't it?
Winged Migration: It's a beautiful documentary, but I didn't realize exactly how amazing it was until I watched the special features. Dude!
Okay. Lunch now. Music later.
