mienaihoshi's birthday a few months ago.
He was guilty enough to admit that part of the reason why he mustered up the courage to go out was because he was getting tired of being the butt of the guys’ jokes. He had thought about this a million times before, of course, but he was really just too chicken to go and make a move. If it wasn’t for his friends’ constant, “Oh my, why are you so slow?” jokes, he wouldn’t have voluntarily called her out.
Yeah, it was a bad reason. But it wasn’t the only reason.
A few months ago, he had started entertaining thoughts of inviting her out. They were, after all, friends and had done a couple of projects together, despite their distance. They had common friends and they write e-mails to each other often. He had often thought of scenarios involving asking her out, but every time, he would recoil and decide to just keep their distance as it is. She didn’t say anything either and in their group, it seemed that their distance was a normal relationship. Yes, at one point, he was satisfied with just being friends - distant friends - because he was afraid of asking.
Or maybe he was afraid of being rejected.
He could never figure out what she’s thinking. She’s sweet and readily listens to him. She jokes around with him and is generous with a lot of things. But she doesn’t divulge a lot about herself. Whenever he asked something about her, he felt that she’s always holding something back. Aside from that, he wondered if her attention towards him was his alone - or was he just one of her “close friends”? She’s close to a lot of people and even had endearing conversations with them (not to mention doing projects with them, too). Somehow, thinking about those things about her made him lose confidence that he’s special or that he’s even liked.
He thought it was safer for both of them to keep their distance.
One day, though, someone asked him how things are going with her. He had readily admitted that no, they haven’t even tried going out. A lot of people seemed surprised, including his friends. Some gave teasing comments that maybe he liked someone else. Some said he was too slow. She herself didn’t deny it and said she hasn’t even met him before. It was a bit embarrassing to him, but mostly because she laughed everything off.
It was then that he realized how much he wanted to see her.
It took a lot of guts to pick up his phone and call her. He had heard her voice before, of course, but hearing her on the phone made him so nervous he could only laugh shakily. He invited her out to dinner and wondered if he was just imagining the amusement in her voice. Somehow, he felt like an idiot. It took him a long time to call her but it only took her seconds to answer yes.
He was probably an idiot, but he was a happy one.
Swerving his bike nearer to the sidewalk, he scanned the crowd near the train station. There was quite a bit of people walking about and it wasn’t even rush hour. He regretted being stubborn and riding his bike instead of taking the train. Still, in his mind, his friends’ remarks remained. “Are you finally going to ride that scooter with a lady?” “Will she even ride it in the first place?” “It’s your dream, isn’t it?” Remembering his friends’ jokes made him sigh and grip the handlebars tightly. If there was someone he’d invite to ride his bike, it would be her and no one else.
But what if she doesn’t want to?
His thoughts got interrupted when he saw her. Well, he was pretty sure it’s her. She wore her hair short and curled. She fidgeted with her dress as she looked around nervously. Somehow, he felt a bit sorry making her wait out there when he could have just specified a shop. He carefully steered towards where she stood, stopped and went to meet her.
The moment their eyes met and he saw the recognition on her face, he knew it was her.
“Good evening,” her nervously greeted. “Have you been waiting long?” She was dressed warmly, but snow was lightly falling. He fidgeted and wondered if he should apologize for making her wait here.
She shook her head. “No…I just got here, too.” She bowed slightly in return. He thought she was red in the face, but it could be just from the cold. “It’s alright.”
He smiled in relief. “That’s good. Hahaha. Sh-Shall we go then?” She nodded and they went towards his bike. He looked back and saw her wearing a skirt. She wouldn’t mind…right? “Is this alright?”
“Hmm?”
“Ahaha…I mean.” He cleared his throat. “Is it okay that we’re…we’re riding my bike to the place?” He wondered if it would be a hassle for her. Ah, he’s such an idiot. He should’ve taken a cab at least!
But she didn’t seem to mind at all. In fact, she smiled cheerfully. “It’ll be a privilege, of course!” she said, laughing good-naturedly. He let out a deep breath and laughed with her. He handed her a helmet and helped her onto the bike.
“If it gets uncomfortable, just tell me,” he said as they went off. He was glad she was just as he thought she would be up close: lively and cheerful. He instantly felt at ease and even though he could still feel his heart ramming his ribs, the feeling of her warmth behind him was almost homey. He could surely get used to this.
“Where are we going?” she asked as they stopped before the red light.
He leaned back a little. “Some place where we could talk?” He heard her giggle and for some reason, he felt like grinning, too. She was that infectious.
“It’s not as if you don’t know that much about me, Clear,” she said, still laughing.
Clear laughed, too. “Well, I could start by asking for your real name, Minmin,” he said.
And then maybe, we could learn further from there, he added in his thoughts as they sped away.

this fic was inspired by a part in clear's namahousou where he said that he hasn't met wotamin before and people were telling them to go meet up.
