See, once upon a time, Dee (
dtn) and I plotted Toshi + 8059. It was soooo much love! Then, G and Ugetsu came. Who am I to resist them?!
So, yeah, this fic is to enable Dee.
The forest was dark as the sky overhead was blocked by large canopies. Thick undergrowth and gnarly vines cover the expanse of the forest. There was almost nothing to see except wood, leaves and strange insects. However, they couldn't let their guard down. It's in places like these where assaults often happen.
G cocked his bow, ready to slide an arrow onto it once he hears a suspicious sound. Ugetsu had his eyes and ears open, his hand ready to unsheathe the sword at his side. They made no sound, even their breathing was done subtle huffs.
Suddenly, there was a faint cry. G, with his nerves already jumpy, reached to retrieve an arrow but he stopped as a hand was placed on his elbow. "Primo!" he exclaimed, voice still raspy from shouting orders in the battle a while ago. "What are you---"
Ugetsu stepped forward and placed a finger on G's lips. "Ssshh!" he said with a smile. "Vongole Primo hath somehow sensed something from that path yonder."
G swatted Ugetsu's hand away, making the young man grin wider, despite trying to be quiet. Quickly, they followed the Primo who was making his way towards a large tree in the middle of their location. G was worried that someone might jump the Primo from the tree. He frowned at Ugetsu's carefree aura; how could this idiot be so careless?
The Primo came to halt and so did they. They watched quizzically as the Primo bent down to peer through the large bushes under the tree and was even more confused when they saw him slightly smile. He turned to them and bade them to look at what he's seeing.
"The Primo is beckoning to us," Ugetsu stated the obvious.
"I can see that!" G said with slight annoyance. He parted the plants before him but he still couldn't see beneath them. Patience tried, he hacked at the bushes with his bow. "Damn these twigs!"
Ugetsu laughed again, and G kind of wanted to punch him -- but not in front of the Primo. "It's because you're a bit small, G-san."
"What do you mean small?!" G snapped, the tattoos on his face getting darker as he blushed. "You're just tall because of your stupid hat."
Suddenly, crying came from under the bushes. Shaking his head, the Primo asked Ugetsu to do the honors and retrieve whatever it was under the bushes. Hat, robe and all, Ugetsu dived under the bushes and within seconds, had a crying baby in his arms.
"A b-ba-baby?" G said in surprise. He was prepared to tackle the strongest assassin in the forest, but to find a baby instead of enemies? He was not expecting that. "Why...who would leave a baby in the forest?" He stared as the baby reached out to him.
The Primo spied a piece of paper hidden inside the baby's mantle. He pulled it out and read it briefly. "Some of the families in the communities here are too poor to take care of their children, especially with this war," the Primo said. "It's a cruel act, leaving babies here, but it is what the real world has made them do." He handed G the letter. It was definitely a plea for the finder of the baby to adopt her and keep her safe. Neither the writer nor the baby's name was written on the letter.
The two guardians kept quiet for a while, digesting the Primo's words. The only sound they hear are of cicadas singing and of the baby's cooing. G jumped when the baby reached out to him once more.
"Oh, G-san, thou hath captured the infant's interest!" Ugetsu said with not-so-hidden glee. He pushed the baby forward so it can tug at G's hair.
"Dammit," G muttered, but he let the baby play with his hair. He had no idea how long the baby had been there and how hard the time she had endured alone in the forest. He felt both pity and concern for the baby, who was smiling at him with hands outstretched. In the end, he gave in and took the baby into his arms, where it comfortably snuggled his chest and fell asleep. "Oh no..."
Even the Primo had to smile as the baby found its comfort zone. "We must give her a name," he quietly said. "Ugetsu, can I leave you the responsibility of naming the baby?"
"As you wish, Primo."
"Then G, could you take care of the baby for a while when we get back to the headquarters?"
G almost dropped the peacefully sleeping baby. "I would, Primo, but why me? I ... I'm sure some are more knowledgeable in this field..."
The Vongole Primo stifled a laugh. "Then, do you mean Alaude? Or Spade?" He started walking back to their original path. "I trust you enough to leave the baby with you, G. And it seems that the she trusts you, too."
G studied the sleeping infant in his arms. It felt good, having someone as vulnerable as the baby leaning against him, trusting him. Gently adjusting the baby's head so it won't roll in awkward positions, G agreed to take care of her while they decide on where it will stay and who will take care of it.
"Do you think the baby will cherish being named after my humble self?" Ugetsu was saying when they were finally in the car. The man had been rattling off weird names even before they left the forest. G wanted to punch him so badly, but he had a baby in his arms. "The second Ugetsu Asa--"
"Who would want a name someone else owns, not to mention a man's name?" G said. "At least give her a unique name."
"But it is my intent to at least give the infant a name after one of her saviors!" Ugetsu said. "It is not possible to use the Primo's given name, therefore I have decided to use either thy name or mine."
G did not reply, which is probably a bad thing because Ugetsu started rambling again. "G-san, should we use thy complete name? Oh! Perhaps we should call her 'H', since it comes after G..."
An explosion was about to occur in the car, preferably with Ugetsu flung out of the window, but Giotto spoke up, rare mischief obvious in his eyes. "How about we combine both of your names for the baby's name?" His suggestion was met with both shock and pleasant surprise, much to the Primo's increasing amusement. "Asari and G. We will name her Asagi."
"Oh! I find the name to be very pleasant to the ears, Primo!"
"Why?!"
The Primo settled comfortably into his seat. "It's a good name and it shows how the baby is now a part of both of you, Ugetsu, G."
Ugetsu seemed to just have reached Cloud Nine with that revelation. "It sounds like a good thing, doesn't it, G-san?" he said with a bright smile, turning to G for agreement. "Nee, G..."
"Don't poke me with your flute!" G said, as he turned away. Despite his outburst, Ugetsu noticed the way his ears turned red. It was an answer positive enough.
And so, Asagi was born into the world of the Vongola, although the discussion as to why Ugetsu was acting as a doting idiot to her (and G) despite the fact that it was G who was to take care of her was long and tiring and involved weeks of childish ignoring, flute-poking, outbursts during dinner and steamy balcony encounters.
