78. Author's choice - Meeting Jo
"Hi." The blonde woman sat down next to Harry. "I recognise you from somewhere, but I can't work out where."
"UNIT?" The Brigadier tended to mostly invite people he'd worked with at UNIT to his parties.
She nodded. "I'm Jo Jones. I used to be the Doctor's assistant. Although I was called Jo Grant then."
That explained the nagging feeling of familiarity he'd had about her. "Harry Sullivan. I became the Medical Officer about the time you left."
"I bet you have lots of stories."
He smiled and they spent the evening exchanging tales of alien invasions and other planets.
81. Author's Choice - meeting Donna
Harry frowned at the woman who'd opened the door - he hadn't been expecting anyone.
"Donna Noble." She smiled. "I'm just temping here for a bit."
Harry hadn't heard of Porton Down employing temps and he was instantly suspicious. "Really?"
She came inside and shut the door. "I've heard rumours you know the Doctor."
He wondered why she wanted to talk about him. "I do. If you're here to work then you can stay and I'll tell you. Otherwise you should leave before you're spotted." At her disappointed expression he added, "And I'll meet you in the pub after work."
82. Author's Choice - meeting Donna 2
"Where have you heard of the Doctor?" Harry asked, still suspicious.
"I've been in his TARDIS."
"Prove it." He folded his arms.
"Right in the middle of my wedding day. One minute I was in the church, the next I was on a spaceship." She didn't sound happy about it. "The Doctor, he was crazy. He saved the world and asked me to go with him. I wish I had."
It was the affection in her voice that convinced him. The Doctor did that to people. He smiled at her and leaned forward. "I wish he'd asked first," he began.
37. A strange sound
It was a strange, unearthly sound, but one Harry had heard before. Albeit not in his garden.
"You're not Amy," the Doctor said, when Harry met him beside the TARDIS. Harry hadn't seen the Doctor look like this before, but there was no mistaking him.
"No, I'm not."
The Doctor waved his sonic screwdriver around, then peered at it. "Right planet, wrong place." He twirled it. "Mustn't keep her waiting."
"Of course, you've never done that."
He hesitated. "I don't do that any more."
As he stepped into the TARDIS and it dematerialised, Harry wondered just how true that was.
88. Author's choice - meeting Barbara
Harry wondered if Sarah would make it to the Brigadier's Christmas party, but she was still off with the Doctor. He must have looked forlorn about the prospect because a dark haired woman asked him if he was alright.
He managed a smile and turned his thoughts back to Earth. "Just worrying about a friend of mine, off somewhere, probably getting into trouble."
"Not with the Doctor?"
Harry blinked. "How did you guess?"
"He generally leads people into trouble. Barbara Chesterton," she introduced herself.
"Harry Sullivan." He shook her hand, then spent a pleasant time discussing the Doctor's trouble-making abilities.
89. Author's choice - meeting Ian (and Barbara)
"Barbara." The man who'd just come up put a hand on Barbara's shoulder and Harry could tell he was her husband before she introduced him as such.
"This is Sarah Jane Smith," he said.
"It's so good to meet you," Barbara said.
Harry frowned, hoping she wouldn't give away all the fears Harry had confessed to her about Sarah's well-being at the Brigadier's Christmas party last year.
Fortunately, Sarah suspected nothing. "So you knew the Doctor too?" she asked.
Ian replied, "Seven years ago. How is the old chap these days?"
Sarah smiled, happy to talk about her favourite subject.
74. Picture of unusual sunbathers
It was winter in Geneva, yet there were people sunbathing. Harry bundled up in warm clothes, but when he arrived at the spot he found he was far too hot. He put a handful of the snow in a sample container to analyse later, but wasn't sure what to do about the people here. Until he heard the voices.
"Hot snow!" This was a tall, red-headed girl.
"What planet is this?" her companion asked.
The man following behind could only be the Doctor, recognisable by his sonic screwdriver. "This is Earth," he said.
Harry smiled. "I'll leave you to it."
35. Burn
Harry wouldn't usually be called to a fire, but apparently there was something odd about this one. So he dutifully drove to Cardiff to examine the ashes. He'd barely got there when the fire sprung up again and before he knew it his blazer was ablaze.
He wasn't sure whether to be glad or annoyed at having an entire bucket of water poured over him.
"Commodore Sullivan, I presume," a man with an American accent and a grin asked.
Harry looked at him suspiciously.
"I have some spare clothes at Torchwood that should fit you."
That explained an awful lot.
