Proud mother

On the 4th of January, my 8 month old baby has started signing back to me for milk. I began signing to her 6 weeks before, and have developed my own signing vocabulary since then. I figured if I am attempting to teach her at least 2 languages, then a 3rd should be no big deal and it will help us all. Indeed, it has already begun to.

I am proud of my effort. Although there are several far more brilliant babies out there who sign more strongly and even earlier, I am proud of my initiative and its results so far .

Another thing I am proud of is my initiative to EC. When I first read about EC, I was between pregnancies, and I thought it was a bit ridiculous. The author of the book mirrored my thoughts by saying that she thought it was training the parents rather than training the child. After my daughter was born, I chanced upon "The diaper free baby" in the library. I was hooked. Despite skepticism from family and friends and ribbing from colleagues, I bought an infant potty. DH was supportive by putting a bleary eyed 6 month old on it too. Morning duties are his, and I wouldn't have fought him if he refused to humour me. The author was helpful in that she reassures the reader that even part time EC would work, so even if my parents didn't want to do this when I was at work, baby would still get the hang of it.

From a few days before Xmas, my darling 8 month cutie has convincingly understood the concept. Granted, she's only gotten half way. She still uses the diaper, but she convincingly and consistently understands the use of her little potty, and I'm thrilled. For three reasons - its developmentally better for her, convenient for us and environmentally better for all. I'd like to think that if we afforded her more opportunities, she wouldn't need to use her diaper at all.

Again, in the EC world, there are many babies who are brighter and more consistent in this department. But I am still proud of my initiative and its apparent result (with due acknowledgment of spousal support).

Also for someone who considers herself a poor and slow reader, I am proud that I have managed to read 12 parenting books in the last 9 months.

In other milestones that I had nothing to do with - she has started crawling as of the 5th, and can pull herself up to sitting on her own as of the 8th.

Motherhood has had many many magical and wonderous moments. As a life experience, it is pretty damn high up on the list of good ones.
