Well, I finally finished the Field Period, only to realize that I actually really enjoyed that kinda work. I love interviewing people and getting so personal with others. I met a lot of new people around the county. I also loved the level of independence. Making my own hours basically, scheduling and conducting my own interviews. It was really great. Casual. Loved it. And one interview in particular stands out - with a veteran who was born and raised in Amsterdam, served in WWII, and has now come out with a book (his published diary from the war). He lives in Virginia now. The other one lives in Arizona, but this one was my favorite. 89 years old, he was friends with Kirk Douglas, and he did so many things in the war. He started crying over the phone talking to me about it, and I was right there with him, I can't even imagine going through what he did. It's a whole new generation of people we're talking about. I felt so honored to be talking with him about his book. One time a bomb was hung up in the bomb bay on his plane and he was the only guy small enough to get to it, so the others held him by his feet, and we went down headfirst (10,000 ft above the earth) and manually released the bomb. He also saved one of his comrades who was seriously injured and made an emergency landing in a field. And the sweetest part of the story was it was the love of his wife that kept him going. He wasn't allowed to keep a diary, but he did anyway in case anything happened to him, he wanted it to go to her. He kept his diary hidden after the war though because it brought back too many painful memories, and he didn't open it till after 9/11, with his wife by his side helping him through it. So amazing. All the proceeds from his book Red Skies at Night: the true diaries of Irving Schaffer, go to the families of the soliders in Iraq. He's a cool guy.
Anyway, I've been invited back to work as a part-time PAID reporter this summer, and I'm definitely going to take that offer! I've been excited for weeks now about that lol.
This is my first weekend back at college. SOOOOOOO much hw already. It's not gonna be an easy semester this time around. I never get a free moment, with the English teacher from hell (rumored to be the toughest on this campus), and the Vagina Monologues. I have to memorize another one now too, since a couple women quit. Now I'm both the British Vagina Workshop woman and the dominatrix lesbian sex worker "The Woman Who Loved to Make Vaginas Happy." Lol. 2 complete opposites, I know. It's certainly going to be tough.
Well, this will probably be the only update for a while so enjoy it lol. Read it three or four times, why not. Lol, good luck with everyone involved in the show at AHS, I don't think I'll be able to come see this one. But keep in touch okiedoke?
Love ya! Happy Valentines Day!!!! (Oh, I can't wait to open my package from Shane lol. It feels completely empty - nothing moves around inside of it, it's hollow! The post office people were like, "We were really worried about this one..." So yea Tiff and I have got a box of anthrax sitting in our room right now lol.)
See everybody the end of March!
