Soul searcher to come. But not today.

So, this is sort of stealing from ihatepavel but I was reading her latest contest and it got me thinking about the music that I've been listening to a lot recently. So, now you get to read about it, you lucky reader, you.

Now, of course the new Rent CD's are a given. But I cannot live by Rent alone, especially considering one of the women I went to a conference this weekend with a woman who is also a Renthead, but a more obnoxious one than me. She'd demand that we listen to Rent the second we got in the car, and she'd sing along. Really loudly. And it wasn't fun.

I love Missy Higgins. She's Australian and folky, lots of piano and acoustic guitar, and the lyrics are really great. The lyrics to one of my favorite Missy Higgins songs
Scar -- Missy Higgins
He left a card, a bar of soap and a scrubbing brush next to a note
That said "use these down to your bones"
And before I knew I had shiny skin and it felt easy being clean like him
I thought "this one knows better than I do"

A triangle trying to squeeze through a circle
He tried to cut me so I'd fit

And doesn't that sound familiar? Doesn't that hit too close to home?
Doesn't that make you shiver; the way things could've gone?
And doesn't it feel peculiar when everyone wants a little more?
so that I do remember to never go that far,
Could you leave me with a scar?

So the next one came with a bag of treats,
she smelled like sugar and spoke like the sea
she told me don't trust them, trust me
Then she pulled at my stitches one by one,
looked at my insides clicking her tongue
and said "This will all have to come undone"

A triangle trying to squeeze through a circle
She tried to blunt me so I'd fit

And doesn't that sound familiar? Doesn't that hit too close to home?
Doesn't that make you shiver; the way things could have gone?
And doesn't it feel peculiar when everyone wants a little more?
So that I do remember to never go that far,
Could you leave me with a scar?

I think I realized just in time, although my old self was hard to find
You can bathe me in your finest wine but I'll never give you mine
'Cos I'm a little bit tired of fearing that I'll be the bad fruit nobody buys
Tell me, did you think we'd all dream the same?

And doesn't that sound familiar? Doesn't that hit too close to home?
Doesn't that make you shiver; the way things could have gone?
And doesn't it feel peculiar when everyone wants a little more?
And so that I do remember to never go that far,
Could you leave me with a scar?
Could you leave me with a scar?

Also on high rotation these days is Jason Mraz. He gets a lot of radio play with songs like "Wordplay" but I especially like "You and I Both" and "I Melt With You." Jason Mraz is kind of one of those guilty pleasures, much like James Blunt, and Coldplay, but I love love love the Coldplay song, "Fix You". And so you get more lyrics
Fix You - Coldplay
When you try your best but you don't succeed
When you get what you want but not what you need
When you feel so tired but you can't sleep
Stuck in reverse

And the tears come streaming down your face
When you lose something you can't replace
When you love someone but it goes to waste
could it be worse?

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

And high up above or down below
When you're too in love to let it go
But if you never try you'll never know
Just what you're worth

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

Tears stream down on your face
When you lose something you cannot replace
Tears stream down your face
And I

Tears stream down on your face
I promise you I will learn from my mistakes
Tears stream down your face
And I

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you.

In the weirder realm, but with lyrics I absolutely love is Abra Moore, "Your Faithful Friend." You know where this is going, don't
Your Faithful Friend -- Abra Moore
Try, if you can, and if you can't
sing, if want, and if you can't
make a sound
go on and on and on,
'til you can't go on and on
any longer

Cry if you can and if you can't
fall to the ground without a sound
hold on and on and on,
won't you hold on and on and on,
don't you let go

'Cause I will be around
to catch you when you're down

You see, it's all about hope,
so don't lose sight now
it's all about faith,
so don't give up on me
it's all about trust,
I'm lifting you up,
I'm holding you safe
under my wing

Try, if you can, and if you can't
sing, if want, and if you can't
make a sound
go on and on and on
'til you can't go on and on
any longer

Cry if you can and if you can't
fall to the ground without a sound
hold on and on and on won't you hold on
and on and on, don't you let go

'Cause I will be around
to catch you when you're down
I will be around...

When I'm not so happy, I love Crossfade, with Cold, Colors, No Giving Up. The new Nickleback CD, "All the Right Reasons" is awesome when you're a little pissed at the world. I also really like Kanye West, (And no, not just for the Hurricane Katrina comments), particularly "Jesus Walks", yeah, I know. It's weird. I'm liking Ben Folds Five right now, and Bonnie Raitt. I'm also really liking k.d. lang, especially Hymns From the 49th Parallel. She does an amazing cover of a Jane Siberry song called "Love is Everything", which isn't as cheezy as it sounds, I swear. I love Natasha Beddingfield's "These Words Are My Own".

There are old classics, like Edwin McCain, Goo Goo Dolls, Tracy Chapman, whose song "Say Hallelujah" is awesome. I love Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's Somewhere Over the Rainbow and It's a Wonderful World. Can't go too far wrong with John Cougar Mellencamp and India Arie's version of "Peaceful World". This was fun!
