Cute and decorative earring holder that takes up NO counter space!

I've seen lots of random things people have done with old picture frames on pintrest. Seeing ones that are for necklace storage & display, etc. So I decided I'd had enough of my earrings being all over the place because they don't all fit on my earring tree. Which, also takes up precious counter top space in my bathroom.

I went to a local charity store (like Goodwill) and found a wonderfully hideous gold, ornate frame. Of course it also came with horrible 80's watercolour of lilies, and a nice glass pane. It cost me $10.

Next, I went to the hardware store; where I got the colour spray paint I wanted, as well as the window screen mesh. Total cost: $10.
the good part about these last two items is I still have left overs for other projects. So for this particular project I really only sent about $3 in materials actually used.

Now to actually get started!
First, take apart the frame; remove said horrible art, and glass. This frame came with a cardboard back that screwed on, as the frame was plastic, not wood as I'd thought. So I set aside the cardboard for later.

Here are my supplies: horribly tacky frame, window screen mesh, & spray paint.

I then took the frame out to be spray painted.

After two coats had fully dried, I then took the frame to have the screen attached.
I didn't get pictures of this part, and to be honest I'm glad, as I'm sure some would have died laughing at the sight of this!
Hubby suggested still using the staple gun to attach the screen. Interestingly the staples did go into the plastic frame, but only a bit. So I hammered them flat. Securing the screen more. However, I still wasn't 100% happy, so then went hot glue happy! *lol* good thing no one can see that part!

Next, I cut the cardboard back of the frame so that it only covered the edges of the back of the frame. That way the mesh had no background behind it.

After having the frame upside down on a table, affixing those things, it had scuffed up the paint on the frame.

So while I took it out to be touched up, I decided on the spur of the moment to paint the mesh, too. I'm glad I did!

It tied it all together rather well!

Now, I just need to get it Up and put my earrings on it! I am thinking if I use some curtain hooks I can even store some of my necklaces on it, too. But I'll likely make a second just for my necklaces and head bands that is a little more sturdy than the mesh. I'll likely use decorative heater covering. Hold more weight without me being concerned about my shameful attachment of said screen under weight of more than earrings ;)

The pictures look different in colour because my iPhone sucks. The light coloured-looking photos are the ones I took. The bright, brilliant-coloured photos were taken by a gf, and are pretty true to actual colour and hue.
