Are YOU rude?
I found this preview thing for an episode of Oprah where they're talking about rude people. It kinda makes me think - are people rude because they're arseholes, or because they've had a really shit up-bringing? I know when I was little mum couldn't handle me. I was completely wild and didn't know the first thing about etiquette even though she so tried to teach me. I just knew I was the boss of mum and could do whatever I wanted. I only started really learning how to be polite after year six, come to think of it. Now I really do try to be polite. If I'm ever staying with anyone I'm always paranoid that I'm going to piss somebody off.
Apparently some of the biggest rude things that piss people off (according to Oprah) are:
-Being chronically late
-Having a mobile phone conversation while you're hanging out with someone else
-Talking really loud in the cinema, or talking on the phone
-Not RSVPing for an event
-Not appologising for the bad behaviour of your little shit (child).
Personally here are the things that personally piss me off:
-People who insist on being late for no good reason. This is probably one of the rudest things I can think of.
-People who talk really loud in the cinema or who talk on their phone.
-People who don't understand house rules. Other people's homes are not your house. Different houses have different rules. The worst thing is when people are dickheads to your pets.
-People who are just dickheads in general and criticise what you're doing when it's none of their fucking business. Example. You're eating sushi. The person you're with says "EEW I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU'RE EATING THAT SHIT IT'S SO DISGUSTING AND GROSS." Or if you're a smoker, and someone you've only JUST met goes "EEW I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU HAVE A CIGARETTE PACKET IN YOUR BAG THAT'S SO FUCKING DISGUSTING I'M GONNA GO PUKE." (for the record I don't smoke, but you shouldn't be rude to them just because they're killing themselves.) Or if you're looking at a DVD and they go "OMG THAT'S THE MOST FUCKING WORST TV SHOW I'VE EVER SEEN AS IF YOU LIKE THAT SHOW YOU'RE SUCH A FUCKING IDIOT OMG." You get the point.
-PEOPLE WHO STEAL OTHER PEOPLE'S PARKING SPACES. THEY'RE JUST EVIL.
-People who are rude to waiters and retail staff.
I found this really funny website called www.etiquettehell.com which is full of stories about encounters with really rude people. Some of them are long, but they're worth a read.
Take Oprah's rude test to find out if you're a rude mudderfucker. If you've ticked yes on more than five questions, buy yourself an etiquette book. It's not the rest of the world that has the problem - it's YOU.
And if you're a parking-space stealer, I will hunt you down and torture you by duct-taping you to a couch and forcing you to watch Epic Movie over and over and over again, while also listening to Kenny G's greatest hits.
I answered yes on three questions. Yes I've gossipped, yes I've typed an email while on the phone, and I let my dog shit on someone else's lawn. Several times. Mwahhaa.
