One of the most eventful nights out I have ever experienced.

"At first I thought it was nothing.. but soon it became evident that something was definitely not right. She couldn't talk, focus her eyes or even keep her head still.."

I met up with Ben, Louise, Eckles, Todd, Little Ash and Michal on the bus and met Ben's friends Nichole and Simon (who were cool) in the city. We went to this bar called Shots which I hadn't been to before. I really liked the music they played there. On the dance floor there were two skanky girls sexy-dancing with each other and virtually every guy in the room was watching as a fat guy bravely went up on stage and approached them. To everyone's surprise, they began practically grinding with him on the dance floor. I couldn't look away. The guy looked like he was having the time of his life and I wanted to go up to him and go "Congratulations dude". Later on the song "are you gonna be my girl" came on and I wanted to go dance. So me and Nichole went and then Louise came and soon enough everyone from our group was up there dancing and it was the funnest thing ever. It was like formal all over again. Our group on the dance floor doing the lamest moves ever like "the lawnmower", "the monkey", "the shopping trolley" and of course that Stayin-Alive dance move. I don't think I will forget the dance moves we made up for "blame it on the boogie" and "can't touch this" any time soon.
Jade met up with us at Shots and we all danced for another half hour or so and moved on to the Enigma.

Unfortunately when we got to the Enigma, our beloved spot in the fresh air was taken and all the tables were full. So we stayed inside the bar itself (which was pretty packed) and Jade and I started playing pool. Two guys got kicked out of the bar by the bouncers. They beat the shit out of them too, right in front of us. I don't know why I found that interesting. By now it was about 1am and I was actually feeling tired. I walked over to the couch where half our group was sitting and asked them for a Wandering Star timetable, and when I came back Jade and Todd were with Louise who didn't seem to be able to stand up. At first I thought it was nothing... but soon it became evident that something was definitely not right. She couldn't talk, focus her eyes or even keep her head still. Her drink had been spiked.

We took her to the couch and had her lie down with four people looking after her as Nichole, Jade and I went to alert the bouncers. Jade said that she had seen a guy following Louise around the entire time we were at the Enigma. Louise had noticed him following her too. The guy must have disappeared when he saw how many of us were surrounding Louise. The staff at the Enigma gave us a free bottle of spring water which we had to keep feeding to her while the bouncers looked for the drink-spiker. We decided we had to take her to the hospital. Instead of calling an ambulance, we caught a taxi to the R.A.H because for one it wouldn't cost us $200 and the taxi would no doubt get us there faster than the ambulance would, seeing as there were about five taxis waiting outside the Enigma anyway. Nichole, Ash, Louise and I got the taxi while the others walked (the R.A.H is only a few blocks away) and the shit part is that even though we were in the emergency ward it was an hour before we could actually see a doctor. We're all like "Our friend's drink has been spiked" and they're all "Uh huh. Does she have a medicare card? ... What is her doctor's name? ... What is her middle name? ... (fifteen minutes later) ...take a seat, a doctor will be with you soon."

By the time the others got there Louise still hadn't seen a doctor. It actually scares me to think that if her drink had been spiked with something lethal she could have died right there in the waiting room. (NOTE: THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU VOTE LIBERAL. MONEY GOES TO THE MILITARY INSTEAD OF HOSPITALS AND EDUCATION.) When she got into one of the portable hospital beds we kept asking her questions to keep her awake. She had a list of things she said about us to keep her awake when we were all standing around her bed. Things like "Viv - curly hair.. Ben - caffiene.. Little Ash - hat.." and so on. She could only say a few words at a time. It was kind of touching, actually... everyone standing around her bed for ages, waiting for a doctor, none of us wanting to leave her side. Ben holding her hand, Nichole feeding her water, and Michal putting his long coat on her to use as a blanket. Wow, and Nichole only met Louise last night.

The doctor gave her a breathaliser test, took her temperature, blood pressure and put this scary needle-thing in her arm that connected to a drip. Alot of blood came out and spilled on the sheets. Lou told me later that she was so numb she didn't feel anything. For me it was like a train wreck, I didn't want to look but I couldn't look away. They took some blood samples to analyse, gave her an injection of this odd liquid and then connected her to a drip full of sodium-whatcha-ma-callit. Once they were pumping that stuff through her blood she looked alot more relaxed and drugged up. I desperately wanted to call her parents but Lou wouldn't let me. After alot of begging she allowed me to call her sister, so I did. She freaked out when I said that Lou's drink had been spiked but I calmed her down and let her know that Lou was totally okay and that she was in hospital and she probably wouldn't have to sleep there. She thanked me for telling her and made her way to the hospital as soon as she could.

By the time her sister got there, the doctor was giving his final diagnosis. He said that her drink had been spiked, and it was probably one of two specific drugs, one of which is clear and odourless and the other was something that I can't remember. He said they won't be able to catch the guy who did it but that Lou would probably be feeling better after a day's rest. After this, Lou and Kelly were looking for some family time so we took our leave after many heart-felt thankyous and get well soons. By this time all the Wandering Stars had left and the next busses were in two and a half hours. We walked from the R.A.H to the Casino and figured out how we were going to get home. Ben, Eckles and Michal waited for two and a half hours to get busses back. Nichole caught a cab by herself because she lives in Seaton. Todd, Ash and I split a cab to the hub where Todd's car was parked and he drove us home. The sun was already up when I got home at around 5:20.

I keep wondering what would have happened to her if we hadn't been there. We've always been responsible on our outings and if it wasn't for that, who knows what might have happened. We followed all the logical rules and they just may have saved her from something awful. Never go anywhere on your own or go out of sight with less than two people. As soon as the guy saw us all surrounding Louise, he knew that whatever he was planning wasn't going to work and ran for it. Never let a drugged victim fall asleep because you don't know for sure if they'll wake up. I wonder what would have happened if we didn't get that stuff from the drip in her system. Would she still be in the state that she was in last night? Or should I say, this morning?

I don't think I'll ever forget the image of all of us standing around Louise's bed, with her mascara running, telling us in her limited speech that she was so sorry for forgetting to watch her drink and getting us all into this mess. She suggested we should all go home and sleep, but we wouldn't hear of it.

Because that's what friends are for.

night out, louise
