YIR 2016

Dec 29, 2016 22:33

Haven't posted in a while- strangely I've had more time but it's been a different sort of time... Anyway hopefully this year in review will catch up everything I've missed.

1. What did you do in 2016 that you'd never done before?

I really really fought for myself. And I won.

2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

As usual, I didn't set any. Years are good for keeping track of events but change cannot happen overnight. I'll keep working hard.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?

Jenn had baby #2!

4. Did anyone close to you die?

Close brushes, but everyone is OK.

5. What countries did you visit?

France, USA.

6. What would you like to have in 2017 that you lacked in 2016?

Realistically there's not much that I could want here that I could actually get- but possibly sorting out the driver's license would be a good thing to have.

7. What date from 2016 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?

April 20- OT MSc Interview day. September 26th- first day of course. December 9th- Benji's birthday.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

Getting on that course. It was such a fight. I had to fight to have my application accepted, I had to fight to prove myself on a waiting list, I had to fight to get everything sorted for my NHS bursary... and I got it done. I didn't miss classes. I got things done and I was a leader in groups.

9. What was your biggest failure?

Really have not taken care of myself very well. I don't manage my time off effectively.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?

I messed up my ankle in the summer and it's pretty massive still. Probably arthritis, hurrah!

11. What was the best thing you bought?

Agreeing with last year's answer- the holiday was fantastic. We got a new bed finally and that was nice. I also bought my first piece of real actual furniture that didn't come in pieces: a vintage teak coffee table from India.

12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?

Oliver has been pretty awesome for me this year. He's a great team member. Claire did really well on her 11+ and will almost certainly be going to the girls school though may have her own waitlist drama. Lewis has this determination and confidence that blows me away- he will argue with me about practicing spellings, refuse to do it, then come home and brag about his perfect scores in my face.

13. Whose behaviour made you depressed?

Ian from HHS drove me up the wall, I feel a bit annoyed still if I see him on campus. Some select family members haven't been great.

14. Where did most of your money go?

Kids, bills.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?

Disneyland, redwoods, leaving my job.

16. What song will always remind you of 2016?

Green Day - Still Breathing.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you happier or sadder?

Probably happier.

i. thinner or fatter?

About the same.

ii. richer or poorer?

Probably poorer.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?

Generally being productive on days off.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?

Sitting around re-watching shit on Netflix.

20. How will you be spending/did you spend Christmas?

No work!! Spent it with in-laws on the 25th and 26th and have had intermittent hibernation since.

21. what was your greatest culinary discovery of 2016?

Claire made a mean minestrone.

22. Did you fall in love in 2016?

N/A

23. How many one night stands?

0

24. What was your favourite TV programme?

About the only shows where I'm still watching new episodes regularly are GoT, Brooklyn 99, and Adventure Time.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?

There are a few people that I no longer have time for. Not hate though. I'm mainly sad that I can't be around them without feeling awful.

26. What was the best book you read?

Railhead, if I read that this year.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?

Hamilton. I held out for so long because I'm weird and when people all say "LISTEN TO THIS" I instantly say 'no don't tell me what to do' but they're always right.

28. What did you want and get?

A raise, a future

29. What did you want and not get?

Honestly the big thing missing in my life is a feeling of belonging. This is because I've just started a new program and I've left my job and I don't really have non-work non-school friends in Colchester. I'll get it eventually. I just don't have it now, and it sucks.

30. What was your favourite film of this year?

The movie I watched a lot of this year was The Martian. Was it my favourite film? I'm not sure. It was a good re-watchable movie that I had on my hard drive, though.

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?

Ugh. I turned 34. It was my leaving party and my birthday party and no one turned up for the meal despite about 7 people saying they would, and then when 4-5 other people turned up at 11 for drinks half of them left soon after for a bar I said I didn't want to go to. We ended up at the worst bar in town.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?

Just a bit less complication and a bit more mental wellness.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2016?

"oh shit, I have no real clothes" + converse

34. What kept you sane?

Sleep. Little successes.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?

Obama.

36. What political issue stirred you the most?

Fuck politics.

37. Who did you miss?

Tim/Serge.

38. Who was the best new person you met?

A few of the girls on the course are just so lovely.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2016.

Fight.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.

You gotta fight for your right to party
