Who teacheth us more than the beasts of the earth, and maketh us wiser than the fowls of heaven? http://bible.cc/job/35-11.htm

If the Torah had not been given, we could have learned modesty from the cat, honesty from the ant, chastity from the dove, and good manners from the rooster. Read more... )

I was just axin', Professor.

I did go through the Guide since this discussion, and from what I remember, the Rambam says that it is improper to think that G-d's purpose in creating any given thing is not to provide something (material or spiritual) to man, since such an assertion raises the question of whether G-d could not have otherwise provided whatever his notional purpose is. If the answer is "yes," then G-d's work is redundant, which is heresy. If the answer is "no," it is obviously heresy. The Rambam says that this matter is basically an insoluble mystery and leaves it at that. In other words, as I understand it, earthly creation can't be reduced to its value to humans.

Imagine, I was thinking precisely about this paper (that also made it into his last book) writing this phrase!

You wonder that your arguments did not convince other people. But there cannot be any convincing arguments here. Everyone just writes whatever comes to mind, and then organizes that into a kind of logical system, with premises and definitions of terms chosen more or less at will. "Pinnacle of creation", "dominion", "image and likeness", and so on - all that can be defined and redefined at will, since we have no facts of matter here, and will never have. Why do you waste your time in such discussions, I wonder. You are a scientist, you should know better.

"Творение без человека не могло быть совершенным: потому что тогда оно не могло бы дойти до мысли о своем Творце. Без людей Бог не создал бы и тех вещей, которые Он сотворил ради людей" Климент Александрийский
Похоже, это нередко встречаемая в патристике даже самых первых веков мысль. Она, конечно, не равна "владычеству над природой".

Техиллим полны описаний природы (гор итд) поклоняющейся Б-гу. Конечно это можно принять в переносном смысле. А можно и в прямом.
